Video problems, screen flickering and reboots!!

No matter what program I use to play video files or dvds on my computer my monitor flickers to black a few times and then reboots. The whole process does not take any longer than 10-15 seconds before the computer will reboot. Upon the last time I booted successfully into windows I had gotten a "recovered from a serious error" message. The files inculded in the error report were:

Now I went through a downloaded MS debugging tools and then I used debugwiz to extract the contents of the minidump file.

Well, I'm no expert at these things but to get things going for you, this line in the debug log would seem to indicate that it has something to do with DVD Shrink.

I'm not really sure why it would cause a problem unless you're using it to play a DVD at the time of the crash. Is DVD Shrink running when this happens?

Out of curiosity, you might try uninstalling it and then see if the crash occurs. If not, we'd know what we're dealing with here and maybe I or somebody else could come up with something to help you with it.

I have that program too but don't know why it would cause this type of problem. I don't see anything in the options that would cause this. I can't see anywhere where it could start automatically with DVD files but, I could be missing something.

Non-experienced Dump Reader - I offer suggestions only.

Since problem seems to be triggered by any media played / monitor flickers / crashes along with nv4_mini.sys showing up numerous times through-out dump, I would be suspicious of video card drivers. If you need to determine your make/model of video card you have, do the following ...
Desktop, on any open spot, Right Click, select Properties, select Settings Tab.

 

Media player? DVD Shrink is not a player (as far as I know).

I find a DVD player comes with the software for a new graphics card or CD/DVD drive. Investigate PowerDVD and WinDVD (if you don't have any "free" versions, you will need to puchase a version).

My response refers to posters opening phrase.
This dump refers to DVD Shrink being loaded at the time this crash occurred, along with numerous mentions of nv4_mini.sys, files belonging to nVidia. With poster stating crashes occur when video files or DVD's are played, my first suspect would be the video drivers. It would be nice if poster could validate if same problem occurs when playing .mpg's / .wmv as opposed to DVD movies ... and what programs used. We need more dumps to get a better understanding of what the problem could be.

As for DVD Shrink being a media player, it has equivalent tools. It is the grandfather of commercial DVD movie backup tools (free). It contains a "Video Previewer" for initial video analysis (2x modes - Normal/Deep) in which it reads movie files (displays movie images if option is ticked) when program loads, and generates base folder views. The next step allows the user to play and view parts of the movie via the built in viewer. The use of viewer is a tool / interface to allow user to choose / select settings.

I should have read more closely , still, I have found problems before I installed a specialized player (specific CODECS may be required ).

I was not trying to distract attention from the driver file you identify. Personally, I would start by installing any update for the motherboard chipset drivers before going on to update the graphics drivers. Graphics drivers, I look for updated drivers at the hardware manufacturer's website (not say, straight from the chipset suppliers website, nVidia in this case).

The old/free version of Everest is in my signature. It may be able to read the hardware information. A summary can be listed (look in the menus). Sandra can also identify hardware.

All of us are giving our best guess with limited information.
We will need more interaction with poster to understand his problems.

What would be good information to help solve issue.
What programs have you tried, but caused crash?
Does it happen on commercial DVD movies?
Does it happen on other graphic media files (.mpg, .wmv, please name file types)?
Have you installed any new devices or software recently?
Have you been able to successful play video previously, or is this a recent problem?
Any additional dumps?

Also, in regards to DVD's I use PowerDVD to play and in regards to media files I have tried playing .avi and .wmv with both Windows Media Player and VLC player and the same thing happens with all the programs.

 

And yes I was able to play videos without a problems previously. This is a fairly recent problem.

 

Both of your dumps are almost identical (somewhat rare).
Unfortunately the two experienced dump readers who frequent the forums have not posted to this thread. My suggestions would be to uninstall nVida video card drivers and reinstall current driver releases for your card. One of nVida's files continues to show up as a potential problem in both dumps.
Matman suggests to consider reinstalling/updating motherboard chipset drivers and then graphic drivers if required. All of these suggestions have merit, unless you can provide more information, it's the best I / we can come up with for now.
I would recommend having current data backups and create a new restore point before any of the above. You can have all your bases covered if you include a image backup of your system drive.

 

Ok here's the latest on my issue. I uninstalled my nvidia drivers and then rebooted. Using the default drivers that XP provides for my video card I was able to play .avi files through VLC media player without a problem. I went to my video card makers site, evga.com, and downloaded the recommended drivers for my geforce fx 5200 card. The site recommended version 93.71 drivers. I installed them and am having the same problem again. I went to nvidias site and they have version 162 drivers available for my card. Should I go ahead and download them or just wait?

 

In addititon I went to MSI's website and I updated all my KM2M motherboard drivers (VIA, Ethernet etc.) to the latest versions.

 

Rollback to what works!!! Few more comments, but have to pick up kids from football game.

 

nVidia current release for your card is ForceWare version 162.18 WHQL (MS signed driver). When you allowed XP to choose driver, did you take notice which driver it was. A few times I updated my vCard the same way (general rule of thumb, don't let MS choose drivers) and notice it would be the last nVidia driver which was signed (WHQL). So check to see which driver XP chose, it may be the very same as nVidia suggests (since it is signed). If it is different, your call. Download the latest from nvidia and give it a test run. If it doesn't work, you can go back to XP's choice..... since that got everything working.

 

Okay I downloaded 162.18 drivers. Same thing has happened to me again! Ugh. I'm going to unistall the drivers now and let XP install its own. I'm going to cross my fingers too... hope this works.

 

Ok I just uninstalled the nvidia driver and rebooted. Now Xp is not giving me any driver. It tried to find a driver for Video Controller (VGA Adapter), but failed. Now i'm driverless, but I am running in 1024x768 w/ 32 bit color. i'm using some kind of generic driver, just not sure which. Going to see if I can play video now.

 

Did you create a restore point BEFORE you started down the driver update road?? If yes, could try restore and hopefully XP will find the previous Vcard driver that worked earlier tonight. This would require you to reload/install mobo chipset, if you want them current.
You have been uninstalling / rebooting inbetween each Vcard driver change??

Where are you uninstalling the "drivers "? There should be a listing in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. This will uninstall the nVidia software as well as the drivers.

My uninstall method...
Boot into safe mode, go to Add/Remove Programs, uninstall the nVidia listing. Check in Device Manager that the Graphics Adapter is gone, or uninstall it.
Reboot into normal mode. When the Add New Hardware wizard runs, direct it to the (evga) drivers CD. This will install the drivers only, it will not install the nVidia software (control panel). Test the drivers. If you want to have the nVidia software installed, run the installer on the drivers CD or an updated version (I suggest the ones you downloaded from evga).

If you have problems during the Add New Hardware wizard, click Cancel, that will load "generic" drivers as you called them (Windows non-specific drivers), then run the drivers installation program.

You can also boot to VGA mode instead of normal mode (from the startup menu -> F8 at startup).

At the moment you are in the graphics drivers "Hokey Pokey ". I don't think try this set or try that set is going to work. You need to uninstall everything cleanly (using safe mode and removing the nVidia software and drivers) to start with a fresh slate.

Look at the "sticky" at the top of the BBS Hardware forum. There is a method there, but I do not like using "driver cleaner" programs.

Ok, here's the latest update. I extracted the files from the nvidia installer and then manually loaded the driver file for forceware 162.18. Everything seems to be going okay now. Perhaps the problem was because of the nvidia console that loads in the taskbar? Not sure, but I'm not complaining. lol

 

Yay! New video problem BSOD Stop Error

I unloaded my 162.18 version drivers for my nividia geforce fx 5200 because I was hacing the same old vidoe problems happening again. Upno reboot during the loading of the desktop it pciked up my card has a VGA adapter bla bla bla and then *BAM* it went BSOD on me and I got a Stop 0x000008E error looking at me. It was saying something about display adapter or what not. Exactly what is this stop error and how do I go about fixing my problem. The BSOD also mentioned something about some kind of memory dump, but I have no idea where to find it to help in the diagnosis of this problem. Any people with any ideas about this? I'm at wit's end right and now and I am this close to saying ***** it and reinstalling XP.
