Hi Mashi
Welcome to Windowsbbs

First you have 2 anti-virus programs running, this is not a good idea.
Please uninstall one of them.
AVG7
Norton AntiVirus

Then do this next please.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Then this next.

Download FindAWF from the link below, saving to the desktop.

http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/FindAWF.exe

Double click it to run. Choose option 1 press enter.

Let the program run, a notepad will open after it has finished.

Please copy and paste the results back here.

Please post the Vundo log and the FindAWF log.

Thanks
Geri

Hi Mashi

OK
Please Delete VundoFix.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Now please do this,

You have some legitmate files that need to be restored. We'll use FindAWF to do the task.

Highlight and copy the bolded list of files below.

"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe "
"C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\bak\atiptaxx.exe "
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\bak\ccApp.exe "

• Run FindAWF again and select option 2.
• Press any key to continue at the Thank you screen.
• A text file will open named files.txt.
• Click below the line in files.txt, then right click and paste the list of files.
• Close files.txt and save the changes.
• FindAWF will restore the files to their original location and automatically do another scan.
• When complete, awf.txt will open.
• Please post it's contents.

Please post the combofix log and the new FindAWF log.

Thanks
Geri

Hi Mashi

Please do this next.

Highlight and copy the bolded list of folders below.

C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\BAK
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak
C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\bak
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\bak
C:\Program Files\SymNetDrv\bak
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak

• Run FindAWF again and select option 3.
• A text file will open named folders.txt.
• Click below the line in folders.txt, then right click and paste the list of folders.
• Close folders.txt and save the changes.
• FindAWF will delete the folders and automatically do another scan.
• When complete, awf.txt will open.
• Please post it's contents.

Then please post a uninstall list. Here is how.

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
• Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
• Click "Open Uninstall Manager "
• Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
• Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Please post these two logs, FindAWF and the Uninstall list.

Thanks
Geri

Hi Mashi

Please do the following.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following.

Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.viewpoint.com/MTS...oupe_load.html
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: <<Note: You will get a warning when removing this, OK the removal.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Then lets run a on-line scan to make sure nothing is lurking.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Hi Mashi

Download
OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
• Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
• Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.
• Click the Move It button.
• The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
• If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
• When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
• A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).

Please post the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles Log here

Thanks
Geri

Hi Mashi

Sorry you might have missed this.
Did you try OTMoveIt on this?

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\My Documents\My eBooks\burner.exe

If this is some kind of burner program you have and wish to keep it, then skip it. please let me know though.

OK evrything else looks good.
How are things running?

You can delete any tools you were asked to download and the files/folders or logs they created, There will be newer versions if ever needed again any way.
These tools.
Vundo fix
Combofix
OTMoveIt

These folders/files.
C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe <<This File
C:\QOOBOX
C:\Combofix quarantine files.txt
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles
C:\!Killbox

Please open SpyBot Search and Destroy
Click on Recovery.
Put a check mark next to all listed items.
Click Purge selected items.
Click yes at the prompt.
Close SpyBot.

Please run ATF cleaner I asked you to download, to clean up the deletions.

We need to turn off and on system restore. There are infections in it and by using system restore you would reinfect yourself.

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
5. Click Apply, and then click OK
Make a new restore point.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
1. Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine

Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.

7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.

9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Hi Geri, I already got rid of the burner.exe file. Overall the computer is running well but this whole experience has been a huge wake up call for me. I will definitely install all the software you suggested and thanks again for getting this pest outta my comp.

Hi Mashi
I'm glad everything is working well.
I must advise you again, only run 1 anti-virus program. I seen that Norton
was just disabled and not removed. Two AV's can confect with each other and end up giving you less protection.

I will mark this thread "resolved ".
