I recently re-installed an older MB and attached the usual
devices to it. CD,CD-RW,IBM H-D,NIC and a NEW Mitsumi
FDD. The opsys (Win2k) not only does not recognize the
new Floppy, but the green light immediately comes on
at power-up time. All other devices work as they should.
The MB is a Shuttle AE-22. I found an existing cable (not
a new one, drive didn't come w/a new cable).
Any advice about the problem would be appreciated.

Sounds like the cable is reversed as indicated by the light being always on. Reverse the cable so that the red stripe is at pin 1 and you should be OK.

thanks for the advice about the cable. You were quite correct about the orientation of the cable. It was backwards. Now that I have corrected it, the system does not recognize the FDD (A- drive). Is it possible that I "fried" the FDD by inserting the flat cable backwards? Win2k stubbornly refuses to acknowlege it's existance.

Anything's possible, however I don't think it's likely. Check the pins to see if maybe one or more got bent.

If you can't find anything physically wrong a new FDD is only about $12 :)

    Also Try

You may have pulled the ribbon slightly apart when attached wrong way. Now remove the ribbon cable & lay connector on table pin holes down & press the back on both the mobo end & drive A end to reseat them little teeth into ribbon. Also try another cable if ya have one. :)
