I have discovered that I can get rid of my ISP($18.95) and my second telephone number($17.00) and sign up for DSL ($50.00). They said that it will cost me about $200.00 to do this. So for about $15.00 more a month I don't have to put up with slowness and ISP's that grind to a halt requiring a reboot 4 times a day. (OK, I'll calm down before I continue)

My question is: Is there a place I can go on the Net that will give me a how to with cabling to connect my machine to my wife's machine and we both will use the DSL and one printer and one scanner? I need to know what to buy and how to hook it up. I have been to some addresses and about one sentence in it's going over my head.

My machine is AMD Duron/Windows 98se. Her's is a pentII 450/Win98se. The comp's are located about 90 feet apart.

    Thanks

A further suggestion I'd make if you want to maintain a home network with the lowest hassle factor possible is to avoid ICS or similar to connect to the internet.

I have a LinkSys 4 port router/switch that I have 2 PCs and a printer plugged into. It shows my ISP one device and uses built-in programs to 1) send internet traffic to the proper PC (NAT) 2) keep my 2 PCs talking at a nice speed 3) provide the PCs with all the settings they need at boot-up (DHCP) 4) handle printer traffic and some other goodies.

I do networking for a living so I could certainly deal with manual setup/controls on all these things but for less than $100, I consider this one of the best investments I've made recently.

NetGear makes a similar device I've seen well recommended and probably other companies but the only one I've used has been the LinkSys and it has been great.

    Ditto on Newt's advice....

I have the same router/switch with 4 PCs networked. All share the same DSL connection and the setup has worked flawlessly for the past 1 1/2 years.

It was essentially a case of plugging everything in and powering it up. Haven't had to fuss with any of the router/switch settings (except to shut off my sis-in-laws rampant internet abuse!!).

It's a great little setup. I get 100 Mbps between machines for file and printer sharing and no hassle DHCP for the internet IP addresses.

Hardest part for me was running the cable throught the joists. :)

    Cheers,

    Gary
