What does or doesn't happen when you try to bootup?

Did you make ANY type of change to the pc before this problem started?

More details on how this happend.

Also the video show extraneous characters over your screen. This indicates a bad video controller. Or Power supply!

I'm not all that great with hardware, but that one screenshot with random Extended ASCII charactors leads me to believe this motherboard is definitely on it's last legs.

The screenshot indicates that the computer isn't "seeing" the hard drive. Double check and see if any connections are loose.

Hey, Johanna - look closely - it's a 160 GB SATA drive. Had me for a moment too :)

first of all thanks for your help. i've tried the connections and they are ok. i've had similar problems earlier and i took the computer to the repair shop. they reinstalled windows and said that they sometimes crash for no reason. this time i'm trying to get some help online. i've booted windows from an original cd and entered the recovery mode. then i typed BOOTCFG /SCAN and an error ocured - corrupt file system. and it said i should try to use CHKDSK. i typed CHKDSK and i got a message - one or more unrecoverable problems. i don't know what to do next. i'm thinking of reinstalling windows but i don' want to delete my files on disk C. is there a way i can do that?

It looks rather like you have a serious hardware problem either with the motherboard or the hard drive - or both.
Check out the hard drive using the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software downloadable from their web site. If you don't know the make, etc of the drive you will need to look inside the case.

A repair install of Windows will not wipe out the data on your hard drive under normal circumstances, but if there is a problem with the drive or the motherboard the repair may not succeed.

    Perform a Repair Installation

i tried to perform a repair installation but when i choose disk C to install windows it says that the disk C is damaged, not formatted or formatted with a incompatible file system. it has to format the C disk but that will delete all files on disk C. is there any way i could save this files.

i've also tried to download some programs from my hard drive site (western digital caviar WD1600JS) but they all need to be extracted and opened in windows. the problem is my windows don't work.

I'd recommend you purchase another hard drive and reinstall Windows. You could then Slave the old drive and hopefully get your important files....

Then, you'd have a means to backup important info to avoid situations like you're in.

Presumably you are posting from another computer? Download the diagnostic tools to that computer - I suggest Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD) and follow the instructions to make a bootable CD .....
and then run it on the computer which won't start.

Alternatively you could use the floppy version if the non-starter has a floppy drive

I am currently using a Samsung 500 Gb SATA with 16 Mb cache as my primary drive with 2 x Hitachi SATA's as secondary drives. Very impressed with the Samsung - which was highly recommended in independent reports. Runs cooler than the Hitachi's and much cooler than the Western Digital PATA drive I used previously.

hmmm, I think my take on this is going to be slightly different.

The first screen shot, even under normal conditions, is entirely generated by BIOS.

Also, even though you're getting dire messages about the potential condition of the hard drive, those messages are initiated based on reports from BIOS.

I STRONGLY suspect your BIOS has, for whatever reason or cause, become corrupt.

I've not heard of one "in the wild" for many years, but frankly it looks to me like it was done by a virus, but that could just be an artifact of the damage.

You could work the hard drive diagnostics as mentioned above, but before I took the step of writting zeros, or replacing thehard drive, I would download and run a bootable BIOS flash and see if things change for the better.

In other words, it is entirely possible that the perceived issues with the Hard Drive are actually a symptom, and not the cause.

If nothing else, flashing the BIOS couldn't hurt, and may only help.

Good Luck, and keep us posted!

Those odd characters would be ringing alarm bells for me. Whatever is happening seems to be corrupting the file system.

I suggest disconnecting any added hardware, PCI cards, USB connections, etc. When you say you checked the connections, you should pull them out and reseat them.

Go into the BIOS settings at startup and select "Setup defaults" (or wording like that).

You can startup with drives disconnected. If you did a BIOS upgrade/flash, you would only need the floppy drive connected. A BIOS flash is not hard, you need to be careful to use the correct one for your model of motherboard (read the instructions carefully).

It seems to be unstable, I would see if was possible to get it stable first.

thanks for all of your help but i couldn't simply understand the procedure of flashing the bios and i find it to be too dificult for me. i took the computer to the repair shop and even they couldn't find the problem but they somehow managed to reinstall windows and its working now. thanks for all of your effort and time. i have only one more question. windows xp can't find my modem. i can't even see it in the device manager. i think there are some drivers missing or i'll have to install it again but i didn't get any cd or floppy with it. do you know where i could find drivers. the modem is an internal ISDN GVC PI128 TA

Have you tried running the New Modem detection wizard? Control Panel (Classic View) -> Phone and Modem Options -> Modem (Add button). You can also use this if you have the drivers and they do not have an installer.

I can see drivers for a
