    :confused: Upon reboot I receive the following alert;

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services aborted

I have cleaned via Avast, Ad-ware SE and Spybot but to no avail.

    Any ideas?

    Hi juniorbravo
    Welcome to Windowsbbs

Please download and post a Hijackthis log, and someone will take a look at it.

Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from here or here
    1. Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    2. Double-click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
(By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis)
    3. Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    4. Put a check by Create a desktop icon and then click Next again.
    5. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    6. At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
    7. Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
(It will scan and the log should open in Notepad.)
    8. Click on "Edit" > "Select All" to higlight the entire Notepad contents.
    9. Then click on "Edit" > "Copy ".
    10. Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
(Right-click in the message body field and select "Paste ".)
CAUTION: DO NOT have HijackThis "fix" anything without carefully following expert guidance. Otherwise, you might render your computer unstable or even unbootable. Most of what HijackThis finds will be harmless or even required.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this log. I recently updated to XP Professional with Service pak 2 and updates. I think the problem came through Firefox though.

    Hi juniorbravo
I don't see anything in you HJT log.

Could you explain? what makes you think that? Did you download something? add any plug-ins?

Might check your firewall, make sure you haven't blocked it there.

This is a pertty generic message, any other messages?

    Junior Bravo reply;

    Hi Geri,

When it comes to this realm of computing I must admit I am not a wizard. All I know is that the alert showed up immediately after I installed Professional over Home XP. I did updates from Microsoft. Then this Yahoo tool bar showed up. It was very difficult to remove. I noticed that the alert is blocking my sound software. I then ran every virus scan and spyware scan I could find. I did run a registry scan and corrected a few things but I am afraid of correcting all of the recommended fixes because sometimes that creates more problems.

As of now the computer runs fine and fast but no sound. Sorry I can't be of more help. Do you see anything in the log that me be the problem?

    Thanks for your help,

    Junior Bravo

    Hi
    No not really.

OK, lets get Yahoo off completely, and I will do some looking around and ask the resident expert to see if he may have an idea.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} (YInstStarter Class) -
    C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\yinsthelper.dll
    O16 - DPF: {BB383206-6DA1-4E80-B62A-3DF950FCC697} (Create & Print ActiveX Plug-in) - http://ak.imgag.com/imgag/cp/install/AxCtp2.cab
    O16 - DPF: {BD8667B7-38D8-4C77-B580-18C3E146372C} (Creative Toolbox Plug-in) - http://ak.imgag.com/imgag/cp/install/Crusher.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HJT.

NOTE: If you do not know what the ones in purple above are, please fix them with HJT.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete these folders (if present):

    C:\Program Files\Yahoo!

    Reboot.

I will see what I can find out and get back to you.

    Hi

Here is what the resident expert had to say,
If the device manager and/or the event logs shows errors. Let me know what they are. we may send him a copy for review.

    Hello Geri,

    I looked at the event viewer and this is what I found. I not sure what it all means. I can drill down on each error and it gives a specific description of the fault. Such as;

    Hi juniorbravo
This is a bit over my head at the moment, so please do the following.

noahdfear would like to look at some logs. please follow these instructions from him.
If he posts here please follow any instructions he may give.

    1. Please create a new folder in Local Disk C: (the root of your drive) named Logs.

    2. Click Start>run and type eventvwr then hit enter. You can alternatively right click My Computer and select Manage, then expand the Event Viewer category. Click Application, then Action>Save Log File As from the menu. Save it as yournameApplication (for me that would be noahdfearApplication) to the new Logs folder. Click System, then Action>Save Log File As and save as yournameSystem to the Logs folder. They should default to the .evt file type when saved.

    3. Click Start>run and type msinfo32 then hit enter, or click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information. Click Components, then File>Export and save it as yournameComponents (it should by default be saved as a text file) to the Logs folder. Click Software Environment, File>Export and save as yournameSoftware to the Logs folder.

    4. Copy the string of text in the code box below.
    Code:
    regedit.exe /e c:\Logs\Uninstall.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\[COLOR="Black"]Windows\CurrentVersion[/COLOR]\Uninstall "
Click Start>Run and paste it in, then hit enter.

    5. Open the Logs folder and verify that the 4 saved logs and the Uninstall.txt files are present. Close the folder then right click it and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) Folder, or use any zip program to zip it. Attach it to an email to me with the subject line RE:smitRem (this is so that it will get delivered to my Inbox and not sent to Junk)

noahdfearATmsnDOTcom (replace AT with @ and DOT with . )

I will post back with possible futher questions/instructions/suggestions as soon as I've had time to review them.

    Thanks
    Geri
