Windows Media Player and Windows Update do not install

    I have had difficulty installing Windows Media Player (versions 10 and 11). Since I do not use it much, I just ignored it. Now, I cannot install windows updates.

    I tried to search for some solutions but haven't had much luck. Someone please help me! I tried to paste my windows update log but there were too many characters.

    I hope to hear from someone soon!

    If you run Windows Update on the machine can you fetch the updates manually?

    Any errors you get in the browser?

    Any errors in your event log?

    To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

    Check your Application and System logs for errors.

    You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

    I am not sure how to update errors manually. I do know that when I try to install windows media player or the updates, there is no error description that follows, only that it could not be installed.

    I opened the event viewer and found:

    You may want to run chkdsk /f from a command prompt.

    Also backup your hard drive ASAP, it could be heading 'south'!

    Meaning just that: Your network (internet?) connection went down.


    Did you try the other things I suggested?

    Hi Arie,

    Yes, I did try the other things you mentioned and I have seen no change. Since then, the automatic updates has tried to load again, which also failed.

    When running chkdsk, i get the following:

    the type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

    Chkdsk cannot run becaues the volume is in use by another
    process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
    checked the next time the system restarts?

    I entered Yes, just to see what happens.

    I am going to look for an external hard drive. Any more suggestions? I am very grateful!

    After that, just restart Windows, and it should run chkdsk on startup.

    Download the Disk diagnostic software from the drive manufacturer's web site and run. That is probably the most authoritative view of the hard drive condition that you will get.
