See my post about my wireless problems - I bet they're similar since I have Vista also . Try right clicking on the double computer screen icon on your tray and select network sharing center , manage wireless networks . Make sure that your network is at the top by moving it up . Also delete all of the other ones . Another thing is to select your network and adapter properties on this same page . In this menu , select IPv4 and click properties . Make sure they're set to connect automatically ( IP address and DNS) . Now , this is what I've just been through but I don't know squat compared to what the regulars know on here !!:D GOOD LUCK !

What's the make & model of your laptop, and what are the specifications of the wireless card in the laptop?
What's the model # of the netgear?

    Hmm... probably AR5007EG
OK, your router is 802.11b only. Your wireless card in the laptop supports both 802.11b & g. I've never heard of Atheros before... Make sure that the Atheros is set to use 802.11b.

Personally I would replace the router & get at least a model capable of 802.11g.

Atheros is the chipset manufacturer, not the adapter manufacturer. Many companies (computer manufacts and network component manufacts) are partners w/ Atheros and use the atheros chipsets in their adapters. The major wifi chipset manufacturers are:
    Atheros
    Intel
    Broadcom
    Marvel
    Agere
    Prism
    Intersil
    Ralink
    Realtek
    Zydas

The major adapter manufacturers all use atheros chipsets in some of their computers and/or routers:
    Linksys, Netgear, Buffalo, Cisco, etc
