Resetting Drive Letter

How do you reset a drive letter (not C)?

I've had a Maxtor external drive that has been "G" for a while that houses my iPod files among other things. The other day I bought and hooked up a Western digital external drive and while it was hooked up I happened to use a USB drive too. The USB is F as usual but now the Maxtor is "H ". My iPod is looking for my Maxtor music on "G ". How do I get the PC to recognize the Maxtor as "G" again?

What is occupying the G designation now?

Right click My Computer and select Manage
In the Storage section, select Disk Management
Right click the drive that you want to change and select Change Drive Letter

If the WD is now G, you will need to first assign it something else that isn't already used before you can assign G to the Maxtor.

 

Go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel

Click on Computer Management
Then Disk Management which is under Heading Storage.

Then change away. You may need to change things and then change them back to get the drive letters as you want them.
