I did not find a cmd.exe file. All I found was cmd, and when I clicked on it, I got the same message I always get, cannot find the file, cmd.exe, check path, destination, etc. It is very confusing! There IS windows directory, there IS system 32 directory, why is the machine not finding them?

    Cannot find the file C\windows\system32\cmd.exe

Do we need to do a low level? I thought the discs were suipposed to do that?

Open any windows explorer window, eg; My Computer or My Documents
Click Tools on the toolbar and select Folder Options.
    Select the View tab.
Scroll down to and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'
    Click OK.
Navigate to C:\Windows\system32 and locate the file command.com
Double click it. It should open a command window.
Paste or type in the command I previously gave you.

Ummm, think I may have just found part of the problem.
You said this is a Windows 2000 operating system, which has a system path of C:\WINNT, yet you note an error message of Cannot find the file C\windows\system32\cmd.exe
Do you have a C:\WINNT folder?
Navigate to C:\WINNT\system32 and see if cmd.exe runs from there.

P.S. Cmd won't be recognized in that directory, either.
    I typed fileassociations.txt after
    c:/windows/system32/
it would not take it any other way

Good! Most all of the associations look OK. Lets get zip files re-associated so that we can run another tool.

Open My Computer and click Tools>Folder Options from the menu. Select the File Types tab. When it populates, scroll down to zip and click the entry once to select it, then click the Change button. Select 'Compressed (zipped) Folders' from the list, check the box 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' and click OK. Click OK again to close. Post back when that's done.

Think you kinda lost me there.

Do you have both a C:\WINNT and a C:\Windows folder with a system32 folder within it?
Do both of those contain the file cmd.exe ?
Which folder did you get cmd.exe to run from? C:\WINNT\system32 or C:\Windows\system32?

What is the exact command you typed to produce the fileassociations.txt file?

I could not get the cmd file in WINNT to execute either. There was also one in the windows/system32 file, but it did nto execute. Then, I had to go to the WINNT/systems 32 folder to find the command file. I went to the Command icon to get the command window up.

    The command window had:

    c:\windows\system32

    I typed in assoc>c:fileassociations.txt

I guess that was wrong because that didn't do anything

So, I just typed fileassocations.txt and that brought up the list I sent you.

    Does that make sense?

    OK, I understand now.

    cmd.exe does not work
You opened a command window using command.com
You expected to see the assoc>c:\fileassociations.txt command do something but you didn't, so you typed fileassociations.txt and it opened.

Just so you are aware, you were not supposed to see the command do anything. It was supposed to create a text file, located in C:, which you would then open by navigating to the file.
If you open My Computer, then Local Disk C:, you should see the fileassociations.txt file (that's assuming you typed the command properly)

Let's move on ....... it seems that despite having the proper association for exe files, they still aren't working. Open the File Types tab in Folder Options as previously described above for zip files. See if exe is listed. If it is, select it and then click the Delete button.

Click New. In the Create new extension window, click the Advanced button. In the File Extension window, type exe
Use the dropdown arrow to select Application from the list for Associated File Type.
    Click OK.
Click OK to close the Folder Options window.

    Try running cmd.exe again.

There is no Zip on the list!
This is getting weird, isn't it?
I'll see if Dave (my husband, Dave) can help with that one.

Create a zip extension then, the same way as for the exe, except that you need to choose Compressed (zipped) Folder for the Associated File Type.

There is no compressed (zipped folder) in the list.
Question, should there be an EXE listed in the File Types list?
    There isn't.

You need to create them, since they don't exist.

Nothing is working the way it is supposed to. We are going out for a little while. I do appreciate your help!
Do you think this is fixable? Or should we go the low level route? Or order the additional discs that have the drivers and softwre applications on it?
I'll check in a little later tonight.
    Have a good afternoon!

Since you appear to have a mix-n-match of system folders, and nothing seems to be working correctly, then I'd say that a format and clean installation is probably a good idea. Get those driver discs though, you may need them. ;)

This can be fixed with one simple little tool, same suggestion I made before.
    Go to this website.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html
    Get Exefix08, then run it.
