I have a HP PAvilion ZV5000 notebook. It was working fine few days back. Now when we try to put the power on the HP logo comes up once and then the screen bocomes black. Please note:

    1) The blue power light is on.
    2) The disk light blinks when we put the power on and then nothing happens.
    3) the fans are running when power is ON.
    4) Tried remove the battery and put the AC adapter directly to the plug.
    5) Removed and reseated the RAM.

    There is no change.

It may be a problem with the HDD. Go into the BIOS/Startup settings and check the information about the HDD. You could try loading the default settings in the BIOS.

It may not be able to find the boot information on the drive. I would boot to the Windows CD (maybe borrow one if you only have a recovery CD) and see if it can identify the Windows installation. Use the HP disk testing utilities.

You have tried F8 to get to the Start Menu?

If you have a floppy drive, try booting with an XP "Quick Boot Disk." It will substitute for your hard drives MBR and also provide the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files in place of the ones on your drive that may be corrupt or missing.

    Get the floppy creator here.

Download that to your Desktop and double-click it. Follow the screen directions to create the Quick Boot floppy.

Then use that floppy to attempt to boot the ailing machine. It will present you with two selections. Try the first one and if it doesn't work, try the other. If neither works, we will know more about your problem.

Post back if you have no floppy drive and I'll hook you up to a CD iso that can be used to burn a Quick Boot CD.

Since I do not currently have a floppy, please let me know how to get the Quick boot in CD.

Here is the zip file that contains the iso file for burning a "Quick Boot" CD.

    XPbootCD2P3D

Download the zip file and expand it. It will give you an iso file that can be used with your burner software to create a CD. That CD will be bootable and will present you with a menu offering to boot any one of three drives and either the first or second partition. I suspect you'll want the first hard drive and either the first or second partition. Try both if necessary. No harm choosing wrong, just reboot and try again.

    To Surferdude2

Thanks for the Boot CD. At least I can start the computer now.
Now let me explain what happens when I start:

I need to press ESC at start to boot the computer. The following message appears at start up:
"Smart Failure predicted on Hard Disk 0: Toshiba MK4025GAS - (PM)
Warning - Immediate back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.
    Press F1 to continue. "

Is there any way other than replacing the hard disk. I have the driver recovery CD, window installation CD when purchased the computer. Will that be of any help.

No, there is little hope. Your hard drive is failing. Back up any critical data that you are fond of and replace the drive.

Once you have it backed up, you can continue to use the drive by booting with the CD but you can be reasonably sure that things will deteriorate soon. :(
