I have a wireless network with a PC in one room and a laptop in another. Both machines are running WIN XP SP2. The PC accesses the web via a DSL modem and has a router and a printer connected. The printer is shared and files are transferred between the two machines via a shared folder

All was well until recently when I became unable to get on-line with the laptop. Running WinsockxpFix solved the problem but now I can no longer print from the laptop nor can I access the shared folder from the laptop. Printing from the PC is OK, as is access to the shared folder.

When I attempt to print from the laptop, a minute or two passes, then I get a message saying the document failed to print. The printer is selected as the default printer on both machines and is
set up to be shared on both.

When I try to open the shared folder on the laptop, a minute or two passes, then I get the error, "<computername>\sharedocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not foundâ€.

I’ve tried pinging and can ping the router from both computers. Pings from either computer to the other are not successful however.

Anyone have an idea what’s gone haywire and how to fix it?

Use the Network wizard to recreate the network again.

I also have the same problem and I have re-created the networks a number of times but I just can't seem to network my computers. I have 3 desktops all running Windows XP Pro and a laptop with Vista which I haven't even tried to network yet. I figured I would get the 3 desktop going before I attempted the laptop.

Any suggestion as to get rid of that error message. I have no idea what it is asking for since I am the administor for all three machines and have all the rights.

    Thanks.

Is the pc conected directly to the router or the dsl modem? If the pc is conected to the dsl modem and the laptop is connected to the router, they are probably on a different subnet... Also make sure both computers are on the same workgroup. Go my computer>properties>computer name>workgroup.

Try network magic to see if it can set it up
Printer sharing runs as a trial for a week
( or 30 days on older versions)

You shouldn't have to purchase third party products to get networking working on Windows.

    Anne.

Let's start from scratch. Are you also using a wireless network?

How are you connecting the PC together : switch or router for example?

Can you ping each PC by IP address (e.g. ping 192.168.0.1)?

Can you ping each PC by name (e.g. ping computer_name where computer_name is the name of your PC)?

Sorry everyone - while I was fussing with the sharing problem, my router went on the fritz and I've been unable to get on line. I'm hoping a new router will get me running again. More later.
