Having bought a new laptop I'm now trying to install my regularly used apps onto it - with the hangups that come with Vista.

I have a copy of WS_FTP Pro and have downloaded the latest (Vista compatible) version from their (Ipswitch) website. When I try to install it, it gets so far through the routine and reports:

    Feature: ProRel
    Component: OEM File:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
Error: The system cannot find the path specified.

If I "OK" the message the installation stops and I'm left with a new C:\Program Files\Ipswitch\WS_FTP Professional folder that's empty. It looks like it should be an easy problem to fix as it seems to be looking for a folder from the NT/2000/XP structure. I asked Ipswitch and was told I will have to pay $39.95 for a service agreement before they'll answer the question.

If anyone has already worked around this and installed a working WS_FTP Pro, the answer will be much appreciated. However, I also have the FireFTP add-on to Firefox and that seems to do all I need so it's not urgent - I'll probably chalk Ipswitch down to bad experience - nice software on XP but it's not irreplaceable and, in my book, paid-for software should include support at least as far as getting it installed.

    Yearly mium

After many years of using their product I have decided I do not need to use it enough to warrant the expenditure -their greed has made me decide not to go any further with their product.

It's a pity that some firms get a successful product (and WS_FTP was one of the standard FTP apps for years) and don't realise that success is a mixture of a good program, good support and reasonable (and up-front) pricing. I'll happily pay a few hundred dollars for a program that fills a need for me without hassle.

I've a Vista issue with iGrafx at the moment, too. I bought their Flowcharter2006 program back in January to do some flowcharts (surprise, surprise!) for a client. Just after buying it, they released their 2007 version. Their website offers a version of 2006 patched for Vista but I've not yet managed to get through their site links and logins to download it. An email to their support team got me a link to the 2007 version but that's no good. They seem reluctant to give me the equivalent link for 2006 and have, in fact, said in an email that 2006 doesn't really work with Vista as the patching was too complicated and that I need to upgrade to 2007. That's not the service I expect with an application that cost $500 about 7 months ago! Needless to say I'm looking around for alternative programs and I'll spend the upgrade money on a new one (and, obviously, that will be the one I recommend to clients).

Well, having waited several days for a reply, I've had an apology from iGrafx! The tech guy says he got confused and thought I was talking about the 2005 version (well, I can empathise with getting confused) and 2006 is Vista compatible and he's sent me a link. The problem with their Resource Center arose because they were switching portals and servers - not an easy time.

I'll try the link tonight when I get home (running via a 3G connection at the moment and too near my download limit to risk a big download and get $2/MB charges)!

So, maybe iGrafx aren't so bad after all :) .

However, not a peep from Ipswitch...

I can't help you with WS_FTP, I've been running CuteFTP since my early Internet days. I'm still running CuteFTP 2.8, even on Vista. It does what I want, I never had a need to upgrade.

    Arnie,

Thanks anyway - I've given up getting WS_FTP to install for the time being. It looked an easy issue to fix and I've wondered about setting up the old XP user directories on Vista to see if that gets past the error. If it was a critical program I'd try it but as I've got a perfectly good alternative (which I'll shortly donate a few $$ to) I'll leave it as poor programming from Ipswitch.
