Guessing you mean it's taking up hard drive space which is much different then memory...

Having a lot of files on your pc shouldn't slow it down...

Is this a ten year old pc that came with Win95? Or is it a pretty beefy machine that is designed to handle XP?

If it came w/ windows 95 then unlikely that it can really handle XP. It may meet the minimum requirements for xp, but xp does not function well w/ less than 512 MB RAM and a modern processor such as P3 500MgHz & above.

First let me say having Win 98 on this computer will in no way slow down the computer as you said in your post. NO WAY!

The computer is running slow because of its age and processor speed and even the HD access speed of that era of computer. Specification are way, way below minimum for XP. You will get used to slowness or go back to Win98.

So that you know! Nothing will improve at all except you will free up HD space.

So doing the below "WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON THE SPEED OF XP ".

If you understand this then get me the info below and I will then give you the steps. From your other message in this post I don't think you believe it, but you will!!!

    1. Drag mouse and copy next line

    set > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Environment.txt

    2. go to start run.
    type
cmd hit enter or click OK

In screen that opens rt click and paste
    hit enter

    Close command prompt.

    3. On the desktop you will find a new icon named Environment.txt.

Dbl click to open and paste this back to the thread!

    4. Rt click My Computer then left click properties

    click Startup and Recovery.

    click edit

    control a to highlight all

rt click the highlighted and paste back to the thread. Warning do not change or save anything when closing this.

With this info I will reply with the steps to remove win98.

    RS

    Don't delete it.
Your pc slowness won't be caused by the old windows installation, there's probably other stuff misaligned.

Yes, I have that same problem. Windows 98 originated on my pc. But then XP was installed. It was working fine for some time but then it gradually started to drain my virtual memory and takes up too much space on my hard drive. I don't know if this makes sense but that's what seems to have happened.
When you say misaligned what do you mean by that?
I want to get rid of 98 without harming my PC. Can someone help me?

Killa K and Snowbug, you both will need to post some information about your system before anyone can make a decision on how best to help you.

    1. What is the size of your Hard Drive?

    2. How much free space does it have?

    3. How much RAM do you have installed?

    4. What speed does your processor operate at?

    5. Do you have System Restore enabled?

    6. Do you get any error messages related to lack of memory?

    7. Do you have more than one hard drive?

That'll do for a start. Answer every one of those please.

misaligned = the possibility of (in no particular order of importance):

    1. not enough ram
    2. faulty hardware
    3. user errors
    4. software settings incorrect
    5. system settings incorrect
    6. virus(es)
    7. spyware
    8. software conflict(s) - some programs don't work well with others
    9. outdated hardware drivers
10 type, condition & speed of processor
    11. other reasons best known to God & Gates.

    Snowbug,

To check that, click on the My Computer icon to open it. You will see all of your drives listed there. Right click the C: drive and select Properties. It will show you the Used Space, Free Space, and Capacity. Record those three and post that info here.

    Same place as above.

From your description thus far, it sounds like you are running low on drive space and the Paging file is having trouble finding enough room to breathe.

While you have your browser open and are reading this post, click Tools on the Toolbar above and select Internet Options. Click the General Tab (if not already open) and click the Settings button. Set the amount of disk space used to 200 Meg and click OK. Then click the Delete Files button. Tag the box to delete Off line content and then OK out of there. Close the browser and go to your Desktop.

Now disable System Restore. You do that by right-clicking the My Computer icon and choosing "Properties" the click the System restore tab. Check the option box to turn off system restore and click OK. Now reboot for effect.

Check your performance and see if it has improved. Report the results along with the other info requested.

From her answers to your questions, she does not lack drive space, she has 6 GB free space on the drive. More ram and increased virtual memory should resolve things provided nothing else is "misaligned ". The answers are confusing though: Snowbug asks "how to go about finding out the size of the hard drive" yet is able to answer how much free space is left. These two data are found out in the same manner, by viewing the Properties of the drive.

Yeah TonyT, that's why I ignored the reported free space and went based on the error being received. This is tough sledding at best. It reportedly worked much better at one time with the same hardware so it just seemed logical that the drive was getting jammed full with TIF's and RP's. Maybe it could also benefit from a good cleanup of all temps.

I apologize I am not computer literate. I was confused about which is which that's all. That's why I'm on this forum.
    It is 6,077,730,816 used space
    and 358,260,736 free space.
    Capacity is about 5.99GB/6,435,991,552.

Proceed with my previous instructions. You are running short on drive space and that's why you are getting the "Low Virtual memory" warnings.

The instruction I gave may help your immediate problem but the long range solution will be to uninstall XP and return to Win98. Your hardware just isn't suitable for full enjoyment of a properly working XP installation. Your HD is too small, your processor is too slow and you do not have sufficient RAM.

The instructions I gave will only allow you to get it to be all that it can be.

I recently followed your instructions. Things seem to working better.
I do not want to return to 98. Is there some other things I can do to bring my computer up to speed?

Nothing else that I am aware of that would overcome your dated hardware problem. If you aren't getting the "Low Virtual Memory" warning, you're about as good as you're ever going to be. :(
