Well, just moved into college and set up a wireless network. It's set up so the university's internet port is wired to the router, which is a linksys. It gives me wireless and is secured with Wep with my own custom code.

My question is, and I don't know if it can be answered, can the university see everything I look at? Or would they need the code?

This is strictly a curioisity question. I don't know if it can be answered

Yes - you're using their wired network and they could sniff anything going across it. WEP only protects the over-the-air portion of your link, and just barely. Consider it more of a "make it easier for an eavesdropper to sniff somone's open link than to sniff yours" solution.

Wep = just for show... no real security.

I make my Wep keys really tough. 26 zeros or 26 ones so I can remember them. :D

As you've noticed the response of the posters, we have concerns with Wep. Which model Linksys router are you using? If this router offers higher security options, is their a reason you prefer not to use them? In a college / dorm (?) environment, I would be very cautious / concerned with WIFI connection.

Using my linux laptop w/ wifi I can crack any WEP key in less than 5 minutes. I have tested this on my own wlan as well as several friends' wlans and family member wlans. (I only do this because I have a comp business and need to setup secure networks for my clients)

If you are not concerned about security then wep will suffice. However, wpa is safer & more secure.

    Consider this possible scenario:
    1. you have an unsecure wlan.
    2. a fellow student nearby uses your wlan to download copyrighted music/movies.
    3. the riaa gets wind of it.
    4. the university is subpoenaed and traces the activity to your wlan.
    5. you get included in the lawsuit or at the very least must now undergo embarrassing and/or unwanted university discipline.
