Hello, and please forgive if this is an off off topic, but I post here as a last resort. The problem:

I opened a gmail account to be able to occasionally email to a certain place without much identification, rather than from my usual Outlook Express...but today I needed to send such an email and I discovered that my full name appears by the "FROM:" field. I immediately tried to change that and couldn't. I tried the Google forum, even though it's such a jungle, but in addition I found that most people there were using the filthiest language I had seen in my long life!!! And SO unnecessary!!!

I got disgusted and quit. But someone gave me a link to a direct contact to Google tech. I clicked on it...and the so called direct contact was the longest ever list of FAQs! I did search through THIS jungle too...to no avail.

If anyone happens to also have a gmail account and know how I can get rid of my full name up in front, I'd be most grateful! I figure if there's no way, I won't need to keep that account.

Thanks ever SO much! :) Adela

On your gmail Inbox page, top right corner, settings then click on the Account tab. From there click on "edit info "...but I couldn't get in from there so if you scroll down you will see another link to change your account settings, go there & click on the Edit button beside personal information...phew..

Worst case scenario...you could setup a new gmail account & enter full name as your initials, then setup existing account to forward messages to the new address. That way you keep all your messages during the rollover & the FROM field has only your initials when sending (from new account).

I browsed the different options in gmail and to follow my steps, go to:

Settings > Accounts > Edit Information

Below your current account name, there is a radio button to click and a field to fill in a different name or an alias. I never tried it ... :p ... that's your job!

Hi with BIG THANKS to Mad, Tony and Christer! It worked! And to think I thought the full name was cemented for life! I guess I was so enraged with what I considered a Google jungle that it must've blinded me to the possibility of fixing it.

Now I see that Google might not be so bad after all. :D

THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN!!! ;o) Adela

    Adela,
    you're welcome ... :) ... !

To be honest, initially, I too used the gmail account as a secondary "trash" account to fight spam on my primary account (at my ISP) but I find myself using gmail increasingly for "normal" duty.

I get "tons" of spam to my gmail account but the filter functions well.

I get only the occasional spam to my primary account (less than one spam a day on average). I don't think that switching to gmail for "trash" is responsible alone for the reduction but also me starting using MailWasherFree to filter and blacklist. The reduction from a lot of spam to less than one spam a day happened over a period of time, say 6-12 months. I have been able to clear the blacklist in MWF, which contained "thousands" of entries, simply because I don't need it anymore.

    Enough off topic,
    Christer
