I'm trying to build 5 new computers and connect them to a wireless network. The computers are running Windows Vista Business. The cd did not support Vista so I had to go to the companies website and download the Vista drivers. The computers see the Wireless card and installs it. I'm able to connect to my network but can't get an IP address. DHCP is running because I have other computers using it. when I try to do an IPconfig /renew I get the messesage that it can't get an IP address from the DHCP server. Any help with this would be great.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,
You have set up other networks, but check the workgroup name. Vista has the default workgroup name of Workgroup, Win XP Home has MSHome.

In Network and Sharing Center, use Customise to set the connection as Private, turn on Network Discovery and File Sharing.

I have not used wireless very much, I might wonder about the channel that the card is using.

PS Check settings for the firewall. Could two firewalls be in operation?

I'm actually joined to a domain. There is a firewall but my DHCP server is inside my network. I have shut off the local windows firewall.

Have you tried setting a static IP address?

Two reasons to do this. First, if you then get full connectivity it will confirm that the problem is communication with the DHCP service. If you don't get full connectivity with a static IP then inability to connect to DHCP is just a symptom of a more fundamental underlying problem (for example, on a wired network - inability to get to DHCP is often a symptom of a cable fault).

Second, I have seen instances (though less common nowadays - NT4 used to behave like this a lot) where a system refused to communicate with DHCP until it had first had some network communication enabled via a static IP address. It's probably something to do with ARP cache. A long shot, but always worth a try.

Even when I give it an IP address it still won't connect.

Then not being able to connect to DHCP is a symptom.

It looks like you are unable to connect to the wireless network. Have you tried turning off your encryption (WEP, WPA) temporarily to see if you get a connection on a clear signal.

From the computer configured with the IP address, try to ping that address... is that successful?
