Background/Wallpaper Not Showing

My computer wont show a picture for my wallpaper. When I go to Display Properties-->Desktop, It wont let me select a background, only a color. But when I shut down my computer, the icons leave the screen, then the picture I set as my background will show for a couple seconds then it goes to the general XP shutting down screen where it reads, "saving your settings ". If anybody can help me, so the background I choose will show on the screen, it would be appreciated.

 

To try the easiest things first, go to Display Properties>Desktop>Customize Desktop button and in the window that opens, go to the Web tab. Uncheck everything there, click OK.

If that doesn't work, go to Kelly's Korner, scroll down to line 142 and in the right-hand column, click on "Allow Wallpaper Background Changes" to download a small .reg file.

Once you have the file saved to the hard drive, run it according to the directions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page. If your antivirus objects, ignore it. The files from Kelly's Korner are safe.

If that doesn't work, the cause is most likely malware. Read this thread on removing malware.

 

Thanks for the help. I tried the registry thing from kelleys korner but its still not letting me choose my background. I'm scanning to see if there is any malware on my computer right now. Is there any other files or registries that could affect my problem? I think had a virus and some other stuff on my computer and maybe it took out another file that has to do with changing my background. I probally have a bigger problem than i think, i just dont know it.

 

My wallpaper shows when my computer first comes on for a little bit then goes to a solid color and the icons appear. It also appears when i go to shut it down. Is there a regedit for making my background show?

It appears you may have (or at least had) malware issues and your currently installed Java version is certainly severely out of date.

At the very least (when you are reasonably confident your computer is clean) you should uninstall your current Java via Add/Remove Programs, reboot, and then install the latest Java version.
