Following the recent installation/download of the latest MS security etc updates I now find that when I click on an e-mail address while using IE 7 I receive the message that the default mail client is not installed correctly?
Further if I click on a PDF download file I get logged out of IE 7. That is it shuts down.

This also happened about two months ago following a similar update?
The only way I managed to correct this was to reinstall my C drive from an Acronis image backup. The updates were then downloaded again and it was OK until now.

Any advice on how to correct this situation would be appreciated, I would rather not reinstall again if I can avoid it

Try uninstalling the two updates for IE 7 delivered last Patch Tuesday through Add/Remove Programs under Windows Internet Explorer 7 ....

    KB 937143
    KB 938127

Then reinstall one at a time to identify the one causing problems.

    Thanks PeteC

I tried to delete KB 937143 and recieved a message saying that
Security Update for Win XP KB921503, 936021, 938829 and Update for Win XP 938828 may not work correctly if KB 937143 is removed?
Looks as though KB 938127 would be OK there was no message for this one

    What is your advice please?

I have had a look at my System restore and note that there are a number of dates prior to the updates on 15-08-07
If I restore to one of these dates is this likely to work for this situation?

The message on trying to uninstall is fairly generic - there are often dire warnings from MS when you initiate an uninstall of their patches. As one has the choice of installing individual patches rather than the whole bunch each Patch Tuesday I would doubt their interdependance.

I would go ahead and uninstall KB 937143 - if your problem is solved fine - if other things fail to work visit Microsoft Update and you will be offered it again.

OTH, if you want to revert to a time prior to Patch Tuesday a System Restore should do the trick.

I used the restore function and it seems to have done the trick
Have created a subsequent restore point in case the next lot of updates cause the same problem.

I realy need to allow the updates for the security aspect but am a bit unhappy that they may cause the problem again.

Should I load all except the IE 7 ones first see if everything is OK then load the two IE 7 ones 1 at a time and check each time.

Or can you suggest a better way.

    I really appreciate your input

Glad to hear that System Restore resolved the problem :) There is no absolute certainty that the IE updates caused the problem, although they are the most likely candidates. I would install the updates one at a time, testing in between and leave the IE updates until last.

Alternatively, with a System Restore point set you could load all the updates except those specifically for IE and test. If all is OK load the IE updates one at a time and test in between.

The first method will save you time in the long run if it is one of the other updates which is causing the problem.

    Well PeteC

After much backing up in case things went wrong I installed all of the updates except the two IE7 ones, everything was OK.
Then installed KB 938127 with no problems and finally the multiple update KB 937143 again with no particular problem.

The only strange thing is that my Zone Alarm Pro Firewall warned me after installing KB 937143 that Internet Explorer 7 is now attempting to monitor the user activities on this computer?
Any Idea why this should occur? I can not say that I am too happy about that

Basically good news then :) Sometimes I guess the updates get fouled up.

This is the general rundown on KB937143 - i've not had a chance to read through it yet.
