Yesterday, Windows posted 10 updates to Vista, I installed them and lost my connection to the internet. In networking diagnostics it let me reestablish my connection, but each time I reboot the problem returns and it tells me that it is connecting to the public connection instead of the private connection. I then have to rerun the diagnostics to re-connect. My drivers check out as ok. One or more of the updates is causing this problem, so it restored my settings prior to installing the updates( had to restore in safe mode, would not work in windows) and the problem is gone, but not I don't have the updates. Does anyone know which of the updates is corrupting my network settings?

    Hi Marvin,

Can't tell you which is causing the problem, but these are the Vista updates in question.

    r leah,

thanks for the info, did the update cause any problems to your system? None of the updates prior to yesterday caused any problems to my system. I could install them one at time, but would take a long time and constant re-booting and possible some restoring.

I just finished installing them. So far, no problems. Being the cautious sort (maybe over cautious?), I shut down everything to do with the AV software as well as a couple of utilities I always have running before I started the install.

    Try this:

    1. Uninstall KB937143
    2. Disable any 3rd party firewall you have running. (temporarily re-enable MS firewall)
    3. Re-apply KB937143
    4. Disable Windows firewall, re-enable 3rd party firewall.

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)

    Download size: 5.4 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

    Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

    -------------------------------------------------

That's the one that got me. I didn't know enough to use Diagnostics to repair it. As I couldn't repair it, I reformatted and reinstalled everything including the Updates. Knocked me off of the Internet Explorer again. Decided to reinstall them one by one. Was lucky and the problem was the first one on the list.

I've put it into the hidden file and intend to leave it there.

Thanks to you all for responding and your suggestions. Arie, 937143 was the first that I reinstalled, and so far no problem. I do suspect that the firewalls have something to do with it, but I had already reinstalled it before I got your suggestion.

Tubby, 936181 was the second that I reinstalled and I can make my connections and there is nothing funny showing in my network.

I just installed the third 933579 and the connection is still working. I am doing one at a time and rebooting after each, even when it does not tell me to restart. I won't press my luck and will install some more tomorrow. What still puzzles me is that when I did the diagnostics and clicked on the get IP address, it kept running and running (the little circle never stopped) and it was looking for the public connection, even though I had selected the private connection, but it would let me connect while still trying to find the public connection. Just don't understand.

I do like the suggestion about turning off the firewall while installing. My computer came with Norton Security working and Windows firewall turned off. Every now and then I turn off Norton, turn on Windows defender, update, and search for spyware, so far defender has found nothing. Spybot always finds a few red items.

    Again thanks for the help.

Have successfully installed all of the 10 updates of 08-14 by doing them one at a time and re-booting after each. I also turned off Norton while doing so(don't know if that helped or not. What is interesting is that Windows update still shows the original updates of 08-14 as being installed and the re-installations. I had uninstalled the original updates, which did not resolve the problem, and then I restored to prior the updates before reinstalling them.
