I like to save everything to a file, and most of the extensions will allow that, but then some of them just want to install, and I don't care for that.
I tried to download 2 today and can't find them anywhere. I have my options set a save-to-disc so I can choose where to save what is downloaded.
Is there anyway to get them to save to a file ? Sometimes I have to work offline and it helps to have everything in a file I can get to.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Rob,

Usually a right click on the file will allow you to save the file. Which two extensions are you having a problem with?

Save to disk is not enough. Where do you save? In firefox2.0.0.6 check Tools|Options|Main| in the middle there is downloads (check that).
I browse to set to Desktop. I believe that if a folder is not selected, it should go, by default, to My Documents

    Rob,

Westside is on the right track, as I didn't get the problem at first. To find the files you downloaded, do a search, and when you find those files, then copy them to the folder you select in: Tools | Options | Main

Many users create a new folder for their Downloads: C:\Downloads

Once you copy the files to the location of your choice in Tools | Options | Main, then you can delete the files which are in the incorrect location.

In rare occasions, the program will by-pass the selected location, and will place the files either in My Documents, or in the Firefox files. But, this is a website issue.
I, usually highlight the files, wherever they may be, select Cut, and, I Paste them wherever I want them.
I prefer to select Desktop as the download location. After I am done, I move them to the S:\Download\extentions folder, which I created.
If you are not confident with cut/paste, do as Ramona suggested.

I am not having any trouble saving files, or in retreiving them. The problem has been some of the extensions do not provide the option of saving. They only want to directly install to the computer and experience has taught me to save a copy of every program, extension, etc, to a file for future use.
If you don't get an option to save, what can you do then ? Hopefully I have explained this better.
    Thanks again,
    Rob

    Example

Hi Ramona, here is an example of what Rob is talking about. Just intalls without any option to save the .xpi file: Spoof Stick

And before you ask/comment  yes I know spoofstick is for older versions of Firefox but will work with newer versions if you use the "override maxVersion compatibility checking" option.

Edit: Well just made a liar of myself, sort of. You can d/l the xpi file and save it to disk using Internet Explorer but if you use Firefox it goes directly to the install dialog box. A right click on the download link give several options but I don't know which one, if any allow a save to disk.

    John,
there are a few sites like that. Another one is the McAfee Site Advisor. I guess that both sites want to keep control on their software. Another bad one in Roboform, which will allow you to save the .xpi file, and even install it, and in spite of the presence of Mr Tech Locall Install or Night Tester Tools, will tell you that it is not compatible. For the sites which do not allow saving the file, it may be worrthwhile to save the page. for Spoofstick it would be right click|save link as|Firefox.html. But, is spoofstick compatible?

    Is Spoof Stick Compatable?

Hi Westside, yes it seems to be if you install it using the "override maxVersion compatibility checking" option. I have it working fine on FF2.0.0.6.

I used to have Spoofstick, but I gave up on it when they quit upgrading it.
    I may try it again.

I have it installed in Firefox but don't really pay too much attention as I seldom surf to dodgy sites. What I do like it for is to run suspicious URL's such as those found on phishing e-mails that look genuine, such as from PayPal or Banking sites. If the URL doesn't match exactly what I KNOW be genuine, it's the trash bin for them.

    Hi JohnB,

Yep, I know what Rob is talking about, and I asked for a link just for my own info, and to ensure there was no .xpi extension for the file. I do wish all extension authors would allow a save!

    I have had VerifyURL for a couple of years. I don't feel that I need Spoofstick. VerifyURL is, also, available as an extention. But, I have it as a bookmarklet of the following properties: :javascript:alert(%22The real URL is: %22 + location.protocol + %22//%22 + location.hostname + %22/%22 + %22\nThe address URL is: %22 + location.href + %22\n%22 + %22If the server names do not match, this may be a spoof.%22);

If you go to the SpoofStick site, click on "SpoofStick for Firefox ", and then right click on "Download Now ", don't you get the option of "Save Link As "? That's how I saved the .xpi file on my computer...

I don't get the option to Save Link Target as: an .xpi file. It selects the page as firefox.htm
I am using Seamonkey now, but Save Link Target as of Seamonkey is the same as Save Link as of Firefox. I just checked it.
I always save my .xpi downloads, and had used Spoofstick, in the past, and there is nothing with its name. what is the name of your .xpi file?

    Hi Rebecca,

I have learned something.:D Yes, that does save the xpi file to my download directory. I thought that Save....etc. just saved the URL to the file. It's not to late for an old dog to learn new tricks. Thanks.

Glad it worked for you, JohnB.
The "Save link As" option initially threw me off, because, like you, I thought that would simply save the link to the file. But JSS3rd set me straight on that a while ago, and I've been using it to download my .xpi files ever since.

    Westside:
When I go to the SpoofStick site, click on "SpoofStick for Firefox ", right click on "Download Now ", and choose "Save Link As ", the resulting file shows up as spoofstick-firefox.xpi

It is not as simple as that. When I made selection, I did not even have the Save Link as option. I came up.only, after I selected to download, and allowed addons installation. Then, although I had no intention of installing Spoofstick, I was able to save the .xpi file. Now, I will have to see if other addons can be saved this way.

Hmmm, it seems to me that it should be as simple as that, as I have no reason to believe that the "Save Link As..." context menu selection doesn't appear by default. To check, on my laptop I just turned off everything having to do with FF downloads, updates, and Installed Addons, and the "Save Link As..." selection still appeared in context menus. To be absolutely certain, I even rebooted the computer ... the context menu selection is still there.

The only one of the 29 extensions I have installed that I've been unable to save as an .xpi file is McAfee's SiteAdvisor. They refer to it on their website as a plug-in, but it shows up in my list of "installed extensions, themes, and plugins" as an extension.

I do have a copy of SiteAdvisor.xpi 25.0 which, if I need to reinstall SiteAdvisor for any reason, automatically updates to the current version (presently 26.5).
