Hi Paul, I have had the same or similar error message from time to time, usually when I have had a failed access to my e-mail with an application such as Mailwasher then swtiched to TB. Mailwasher seems to not "let go" of the account. The only way I have found to correct this is to close all mail applications, disconnect from the dial-up (or in your case if you had DSL or Cable shut of and restart your modem) then reboot the computer and try again. Usually works for me.

Excellent John, like the error said something was hanging it up, maybe AVG Anti-virus checking for in cominging or out going e-mails. I do have cable internet. I'll see what happens John and go back to the post and let you know..
Many thanks to my neighbor to the North ;)

    Paul,
let us know if it works. My son, in Michigan, and my sister-in-law, in Maine have Comcast. It may be something in your computer, as John B suggested, or something about Comcast.

Dear Westside & John, okay I uninstalled Zone Alarm the Free version because something was hangin up my mail by that error. I never had that trouble before though people of any kind with my e-mail wheather it was Outlook 2003, OE, or Thunderbird which I was using at the time of this error. I have had Comcast cable for 4 years and NEVER had a single complaint with it Westside. I live in Revere,MA. 1 mile north of Boston. I hate the cost of course but its a class act in my area...sorry it took so long to get back, I was at work...
    Thanks for the help.

Paul, I know where you are located (formerly from Waltham, MA). But, I don't understand if you solved the problem, or not. I had to get rid of Zone Alarm, which started acting up. In fact, it caused so many problems that it cut me off the internet.

Okay I think its fixed (hanging) but I look in lower right corner of Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 where it shows mail going thru AVG's AV then it seems to stop loading e-mail. An Error pops up "Connection to server mail.comcast.net has timed out ". Also I think that my Internet is also timing out on occasions.
Any idea for a fix please..
    ThankZ-Paul

Paul, I don't have AVG's AV but have you tried turning off the outgoing mail scan in AVG. I don't even know if you can, but it's worth a try to find out if that is part of the problem.

    Paul,

JohnB's suggestion is excellent, and you don't need the mail scan with AVG, as you are protected by Thunderbird!

Thunderbird will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically. You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.

JavaScript is switched off by default for mail and news, so an e-mail cannot run script code just by being opened. As with any mail program, take proper caution before running any file that you receive in e-mail.

Disable this setting (if enabled): Tools | Options | Privacy | Anti-Virus
"Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine individual messages "

Give Sygate Firewall a whirl, and see if you like it. I changed to Sygate when I started having problems with ZA. You can download the program here: http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160

I use AVG scan, mainly to prove the point that it is not the problem. However, in rare occasions, I have had errors at pop.central.cox.net, not timeouts. Invariably, I can access my mail by trying again.
I am using Sygate as Firewall.

Well i was hoping sooner or later I would hear from good friend Ramona, always offering her help :) Nice to hear from you..I did check my T-Birds ver 2.0.0.6
under Tools/Options/Privacy/Anti-Virus Tab/ the box is NOT checked and never has been. Now the hang I get is when in bottom right of my Inbox after it tries to dl my mail. It shows the AVG box saying scaning for ?? i forget now. I uninstalled Zone Alarm Ramona. So with NO firewall all my mail just dl perfect. I know I need a firewall with my Comcast cable so I dl sygate and giving that a try now. What always blows my mind is a piece of software can work just PERFECT for a year, then same software or hardware (LINKSYS Wireless Router) goes nuts on us.
Thanks again Ramona & friends..I'll see how sygate works. Oh, back to not being able to reboot my PC again? I'm having to many troubles my poor polish head hurts

    Man! You are having problems!
By the way, if you have AVG, you need to configure the program which does the e-mail scanning, i.e. AVG. Double click on its icon (I have it in the systray), and select E-mail Scanner|Plugin tab|Disable Plugin (there is a button there).
As for the software acting up, Zone Alarm has done it for me after certain updates.
Not being able to reboot the PC is another issue. There is stuff in Help and Support. I will look that up.
Take two aspirins and.... Just relax.
