I often notice such spaces in HJT logs, BSOD dump logs, etc. and I have long wondered why vBulletin does that (assuming it's a vBulletin bug) and how to work around it.

Yes, it's a vBulletin bug. Max limit on consecutive characters. The work-around is best explained in the following link.
