Programs will not open!

    Excuse the stupid question, but my daughter's inherited Dell Inspiron 1100 running XP has slowed to a crawl and programs do not seem to open, but when I shut down I get the "end now" message saying the programs are running. The computer's old, but still servicable and works fine for a nine year old. Any suggestions how to bring it back?

    Did the slowdown occur suddenly or has it gradually been getting worse over months?

    How much RAM is installed in the laptop?

    Given a nine year old's curiousity, and flashing ads promising free things, I would say it got infected with some type of malware. I would go here and see what pops up.
    Housecall, online AV scan
    If anything does show up, let that site remove it, then please post a HijackThis here.
