Hi, I did my yearly clean install and it went great. PC was rebooting no problem but after I started to load in my updates from Windows Updates it will not boot now ??? I did a few small groups of updates and I could re-boot by start/turn of computer/restart but after a larger group of updates it will not re-boot
    Any help please?
    Windows XP Pro

The thing is, it will boot now because I just did another Clean Install. I've loaded XP Pro, all the drivers from my Dell CD. Zone Alarm free Firewall, & free AVG AV. Thunderbird & Firefox are loaded and its booting fine., I have my troubles when I begin loading the Microsoft Security Updates . I have about 12 loaded now and I can still boot but should I load 1 at a time from here out?? Any more info needed. I have Cable Internet.

That might be the only way to figure out which update is causing the problem.

Have you checked for a BIOS update for your system?

Which flavour of XP? Any ServicePacks included or slipstreamed to an RTM CD? You haven't mentioned if any SP was installed, that's why I ask.

If no SP, then start with SP2.

I assume that you have downloaded the updates and burnt to CD, right?

If so, start with WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe which is the most recent version of Windows Installer. Reboot and continue with the rest of the updates. It shouldn't matter in which order but taking them in order of date might make a difference. (I can provide the list of updates (post SP2) in order of date.

Hi Christer, I have Windows XP PRO SP2. Now I'm embarrased to tell you this but I always wanted to burn all those dam security updates to a CD-R, just not sure where or how to get them from. I just went to Microsofts IE page and DL IE7, not from Windows Update.

This is what made me believe you had them on CD. Anyway, below is my list and you can get them at Windows Update Catalog or Microsoft Download Center. The first number is the date (YYMMDD) according to the digital signature (can differ for a different language) and the second is the KB-number:

The stand is July 2007 and in a few hours there will be a few more ... ... ! My system is AMD and there may be updates for INTEL systems and possibly other updates not needed for my specific system.

Personally, I wouldn't install anything else until the issue with the update(s) has been resolved.

Your GREAT for posting that list Christer. So I'll save them to my hard drive then burn them onto a CD-R, correct. Christer, if I have a certain security update already on my computer & I burn it on my CD will it just install over the first one? I won't have 2 of the same updates on PC correct. I know that this and some of my questions are not the smartest a person could ask but sometimes I just haven't a clue at what i'm doing  :)
I'm just afraid to DL anything now with my PC rebooting okay ;) but I have to load the Updates...Thanks for your patience

It should indicate that it is already installed - it won't install twice :)

Maybe neither the place nor the time to start "selling" Imaging Software but when I install a system from square one, I create several Images along the way. Clean install of XP-SP2 > first Image, all hardware drivers > second Image, all updates to XP-SP2 > third Image, all "for keeps" programs installed and updated > fourth Image and so on. Whenever the proverbial "you know what" hits the fan ... ... it's a matter of minutes before I'm back on track without going back to square one.

When using the system, I create an Image on a monthly basis, after the batch of updates has been installed.

In my opinion, any flavour of Imaging Software is wort the money spent!

Back on the topic of Updates, while checking yesterdays batch, I noticed that some updates are different depending on different versions of Windows components, such as Windows Media Player. In most cases, the KB-number is the same but in some cases, the KB-number is different. Watch out when you download according to my list but if you should try to install an update that is not designed for your system, then it won't.

Everyone, thank you ALL so much for your time and effort in helping a sometimes brain-dead Sox fan here over last few days. I have begun to download all the "Security Updates to my hard drive so I can burn them on CD.
Now, really not sure why but my PC is booting just fine. I think after all was said and done it was either my Wireless Router or the software Weatherbug which I can't live without..Any good free alternatives to Weatherbug out there?? (desktop temp & weather)
Christer, thank you big time for all the help and especially that list was above and beyond. On the subject of "Imaging" I would love to start that project next because of exactly what you said, everything in its special place on the HD, easy to rectify a problem. Christer, is Acronis True Image the choice in your Humble opinion ;)
    Thanks again people :D

You're welcome ... :) ... ! I started that list after a clean installation of Windows XP with SP2 slipstreamed and I have the same list from square one of Office XP (2002) with SP3 slipstreamed. It is quite easy to update the list once a month but the tricky part is to find out which updates have been superceeded.

My list and the dates connected to each update is valid for my system, its installed Windows/Office components and language version (Swedish). The dates will differ for different language versions but the "time-line" is the same.

I use Norton Ghost 2003 and do everything booted from Ghost Boot Disks (DOS). I only image the system partition. The data partition is backed up using Replicator. Nothing runs in the background or scheduled since I have the image and backup partitions on separate HDDs and neither one is connected under normal usage, only when imaging, backing up and recovering (not very often but occasionally I get innovative ... ...). I use a Mobile Rack to be able to run the system with or without the "additional" HDDs.

There are other imaging software, from Norton and others, that make a base image and incremental images "on the fly according to a set schedule ". Which ever software and method you choose, I recommend keeping the system and data on separate partitions covered by separate images/backups.

    PC won't Boot again

I'm lost. I can't figure out what happened. My desktop PC won't boot again. I know that the Windows Security updates did not cause my problem. I did get rid of free version of Zone Alarm and am now using Sygate Free Firewall. Maybe I should go to the System Restore and go back to it reboots???? Please help

A computer built by yours truly, belonging to a friends son, started acting up. Didn't shut down and next, didn't boot other than in safe mode. He restored the most recent Ghost Image but the problems persisted. I suggested he open the case to see if there was dust accumulation in the fans and heat sinks. There was and he cleaned it out. After that, I haven't heard from him.

    Maybe worth a try?

Christer, I tried your idea, a good one but sorry you have heard from me again.
I'm wondering if my PC will boot in safe mode  Never booted a PC in 7 years in Safe Mode, I read "Help" in Windows but because the PC won't boot, this is a problem (catch 22) Maybe "System Restore" :(

Okay pete, first, I did forget how to boot in Safe Mode so thank you for the instructions :D your a mind reader buddy. Next I did not do the safe mode, but I went to system Restore and where i had just done my Clean Install of XP PRO I went back 2 days and its booting. So I guess now I carefully load software as to find what could be causing me the problem. Pete, where I went to "Restore" and everything (Hardware) is loaded it has to be software, correct??? Nothing I have not had on my PC before and it always re-booted for me. Must be software, correct ??? Oh, I have changed 1 thing now. After 1 year of free Zone Alarm Firewall I dl Sygate free firewall.
