    Lo all

Ive just done a new xp sp2 install and I got multiple BSODs of KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
In the event viewer the source was stated "cdrom" which apparently have a bad sector (event ID 7). My DVD-RW (the only "CD-ROM" I got) was working properly prior to the installtion, in fact I never had any BSODs with my former xp.

Followin MS support advice I ran a chekdisk on my HDD, figuring it wouldnt hurt even though the problem was traced to the cdrom, and I did get a day and a half with no problems.

Than I tried to install Rivatuner and got another BSOD, this time with no head message. I looked at the event viewer and again it was the cdrom with event ID 7.

After searching the net a bit for drivers Ive found that I dont need any, so Im running out of ideas as to what to do now.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Jet Boot Jack - Welcome to the Board :)

Have you installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard?

Have you installed Daemon Tools? This can cause the error you post.

    KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
    Troubleshooting "Stop 0x00000077" or "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR "

Did you install Antivirus software before connecting to the Internet to download updates?

If you disconnect the DVD-RW do you still get the BSOD's?

If none of the above help refer here and post a dump log which we will try to interpret .....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33471

    Please note ....

Unfortunately these logs require expert knowledge to analyse and no one on the Board at present has the depth of knowledge necessary. However we can make observations and suggestions as to how you might proceed towards finding the cause ....

Hello Pete C, and thanks for the warm welcome. :)

I installed the OS "by the book "- one of the first things I did was to install the chipset drivers, than the rest of the drivers and than an anti-virus (AVG free ediiton)- it cant be a virus.

By plugging out the DVD d'you mean I must physicaly unplug it from the mobo and psu? Or will disabling it with the device manager be good enough for this check?

I forgot to add that not only did this device worked properly prior to installtion, it's still working problem-free now: I can see movies, install games and what not... the funny thing is that all those BSODs occured when it wasnt even accessed AFAIK.

Disabling in Device Manager should suffice - bit of a long shot, but worth a try of course.
Can we get this out of the equation, please.

I think you ought to post a couple of dump logs - only 2, we will ask for more if required.

In the back of my mind I knew I forgot to refer to one of your points.

No, I dont think I installed Daemon tools,- while the name is familiar I dont even know what it is.

A couple of dump logs will soon be posted.

It seems like my system doesnt store dump files.
I downloaded the debugging tools and followed all the instructions in the link but there are no dump files in the specified locations.

I searched for all .dmp extensions and found only one, in a specific game folder. I generated a log out of it to try an see if there's a relation to my BSODs and found that it's dated to the 7th of Augost which is very peculiar- I did this fresh install only four days ago...

My page file is 3.5 MB and I have only one partition so it must be on the same one as the %systemroot% (which btw, I could not find). All the other possible causes dont seem probable.

Maybe the problem is here- "Note: Before troubleshooting the problem, make sure that the computer is correctly configured to save a crash dump file. "- How do I do that?

%systemroot% is the directory in which the operating system is installed, eg; C:\Windows

To configure the computer to give a dump file, which BTW is normally done by default on install, is ....

Right click My Computer icon > Properties > Advanced tab > Startup & Recovery > Settings button ....

Under System Failure the first two items should be checked. Uncheck 'Automatically Restart' if checked and from the dropdown list select Kernal Memory Dump and the default location of the dump file should be %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP

'Overwrite any existing file' should be checked.

I could have sworn Ive seen "%systemroot%" as a dir on my old xp. NM, each day you learn etc.

Im trying to do follow your instuctions but XP likes to make things difficult for me-
When I try to change "write debugging info" from small to kernel mem dump, it sais I need to have the alerter service running. I try to activate the alerter and get "Errpr 1068: the dependency group failed to start."

Seems like I have to struggle in each step and impose on you new set of questions each time. :(

The message you receive is correct re, the Alerter Service - I did some experimenting - stopped the service and on changing the dump settings the service restarted. I assume you tried to set the Alerter service to 'Automatic' through Services?

On my computer the service is dependant on Workgroup - I have a network of 3 computers so I am unable to determine if that dependency exists on a standalone.

It seems that part of your fresh install is a little flaky and I am wondering if you would not be better off making a repair install.

Hmmm.. is there any risk in that? Will it know what to repair automaticaly?

Not at this stage with a near fresh install - basically a repair reinstalls Windows leaving anything which is non-OS untouched.

Ok, I figured why the alerter couldnt start:- because I disabled the workstation service. I did it because Ive always hated how the system hangs after each boot for something like 2 min till the LAN icon appears, during which I cant do nothing. Following an advice from the web I disabled it as Im not part of a home network and it worked like a charm.
I'd hate to lose it now but this is more important.

So now I guess we'll just have to wait for another BSOD to happen. :D
BTW- its been working well this whole day and I tried to generate another one by installing Rivatuner,... but alas- all was well. ;)

Hello again, Pete. I just got a BSOD now after those few quiet days, but there was no dump file generated. I checked the system failure settings and they are ok and the alerter service is on.
Maybe it is related to the fact that this BSOD didnt act as usual and just stayed on screen for five minutes till eventualy I booted the machine manualy.

Check for the 'missing; file by searching for *.dmp and see if anything turns up with the right date.

Good idea- I found one but its not the recent one, apparently my PC BSODed on me behind my back when I was away.

It also generated a mini-dump file with the same date and time so if you need it too- just tell me.

    Here's the "big" dump-
