When you try to play a DVD in Media Player - what happens? Do you get an error message?

Run the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility and see what it comes up with.

Which version of Media Player are you using?

Did this problem just start or did it start after you loaded other software - Nero perhaps?

Try installing WMP 11 'over the top' of the existing install.

    Download WMP 11

The following method of uninstalling WMP 11 (and rolling back to WMP10) is uncorroborated, but seems sensible and safe, but at your own risk :) ....

In Windows Explorer go to Tools > Folder Options > View and check 'Show hidden files and folders.

    Then navigate to ....

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallwmp11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe and double click on spuninst.exe to run.

    Reboot

    Then navigate to ....

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe and double click on spuninst.exe to run.

    Reboot

If all goes well you should have removed WMP 11 and rolled back to WMP 10 - or possibly 9.

Let us know how things turn out.

I'm a little bit concerned that you cannot navigate in Windows Explorer to a specified file when you give your computer experience as Intermediate - no offence implied, but that's very basic stuff :)

    OK .....

In Windows Explorer go to Tools > Folder Options > View and check 'Show hidden files and folders. OK your way out and back to the main Windows Esplorer pane.

Click on C:\ drive in the left hand pane to open the contents in the right hand pane - if not already opened.

In the right hand pane double click on Windows - the contents of the Windows directory open in the right hand pane.

If you have enabled 'Show hidden files and folders' as above there should be a clump of files coloured blue at the head of the list.

Scroll down to $NtUninstallwmp11$ - towards the bottom of the blue items - and double click on it to open the folder.

In the new pane which opens double click on the folder spuninst to open it and then double click on spuninst.exe to run it.

    and so on.

If you do not feel confident to do this then don't :)

show hidden files was already ticked and not poss to untick,as for blue clump it did not show what you said..mike

Let's double check that you do not have the WMP 11 uninstall files on your computer ....

Open Windows Explorer and click on the Search Icon

In the Search Companion pane - What do you want to search for? click on the All Files and Folders button

In the All or part of the filename box enter $NtUninstallwmp11$ - you may copy/paste from this post to avoid spelling mistakes :)

Click on More Advanced Options and check the first 3 items and then click on Search.

Post back with the search result.

I agree - if the uninstall files are not there that is the root of the problem.

I will try and get a second opinion on this.
