Hi, I use a laptop and found myself using a lot of memory; as I'm getting more and more into multi-media stuff I wanted to delete some files to free up room...I deleted nearly all the multi-media files that I installed on my computer and then decided to lose some programs.

I uninstalled all the ones that I could and then deleted the files but the deletion of the following types of files never seemed to free up memory:

downloaded zips of files that I had already installed.
    Netscape Navigator
Media Players that I downloaded to evaluate and then didn't want
    Stuff like that...

All the docs, mp3s, WAV files, and avi files freed up memory but nothing else--the disc space available number remains the same.

And yes, I did empty the recycle bin. The only thing that I can figure are that these programs are still on my hard disc somewhere...anyone know how to remove them?

    Try the following:

A complete system check for viri using the very latest def files. Set to check all files rather than just certain types.

    start~run~cmd
    chdksk c: /r
(and the same for any other hard drives/partitions you have)
If you get a message saying it can't be done but asking about doing it at next reboot, answer Yes and then reboot. And the process may take a while to complete.

When that finishes, do a defrag.

See if you are in better shape then.

And if you are using FAT32, I'd suggest converting to NTFS.

    start~run~cmd
    convert /FS:NTFS /V

    A Virus

Hmmm, certainly hope this is not a virus; I discovered this trying to update my Norton Security--there was not enough space on my harddisc....

I just ran a defrag a week ago, but I'll run another.

Why is the other system better than FAT32, or should I go back to FAT when I've fixed things up?
