Lately, whenever I do a search in IE7, I end up with numerous results such as, "Shopping for (searchname)?" from MonsterMarketPlace.com, "Looking for (searchname)?" from Toseeka.org, "Search for (searchname) at Nester.com ",
    etc.

At first I thought it was a problem with the Google search engine but I get similar results using the search feature on MSN's page.

Funny thing is, I have another machine that doesn't have the problem. I've tried comparing settings on the two but to no avail.

    Any ideas?

Also, when using the Google search engine, if I click "Advanced Search ", then "Google Search ", the problem goes away. This is unnecessary on my other machine.

So if you search for, say, widgets using Google you do not get a page of hits relating to widgets? If that is the case your browser may have been hijacked and is being redirected.

There is a similar case here on the BBS, but I do not intend to post the thread URL as each case must be dealt with individually and the solution that worked there may not work in your case.

Please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location.

Open the folder in which you placed HJT and double click on hijackthis.exe and select Scan and save a log file - this will be saved in the folder from which you ran HJT - post the log here.

I have moved your thread to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

    Hi Pete:

    Thanks for your reply

Just to clarify, I do get hits relating to widgets but they're mixed in with the nuisance "Shopping for? ", etc. hits.

I'll download HijackThis and follow your instructions.

    Dave

I see the problem, but am not trained to analyse HJT logs and indicate remedial action.

Please be patient and wait for one of our experts to respond.

    Hi Dave,

Unless you live in the Ukraine, or you want a server in the Ukraine as your dns nameserver, your dns has been hijacked. (Yes, I see you're a Hoosier ;) )

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close all programs and windows, then click Fix checked.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gf1.0.0.2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggf.exe
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{18C18361-5D61-4740-9312-2DF29EA1E00A}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{18C18361-5D61-4740-9312-2DF29EA1E00A}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{18C18361-5D61-4740-9312-2DF29EA1E00A}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ldojbshfqnck - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldojbshfqnck.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: yawohjjywmrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\yawohjjywmrq.dll (file missing)

    Close HijackThis.

Delete the following files if present.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggf.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldojbshfqnck.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yawohjjywmrq.dll

    Reboot.

Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of main.txt only for now.

    Hi again noahdfear:

I'm at a different computer now, so I won't be able to follow your directions for another day or two. In the meantime though, what did you find in the HJT log I posted that tells you the hijacker is in the Ukraine? Also, do you have any idea what he may be up to?

    Thanks for your help.

    Dave

    Hi yet again:

Forgot to tell you, the three files you mentioned,

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggf.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldojbshfqnck.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yawohjjywmrq.dll

    weren't there.

    Delete the following.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\umablrfk << folder
    C:\Program Files\wt3d.ini << file

You have some disabled Symantec startups. Open msconfig and recheck these items.

    CLTNetCnService
    ccSetMgr
    ccEvtMgr

Click OK and Exit without restarting.

Click Start>Run, copy the following commands, then paste them one at a time hitting enter after each.

    sc stop Symantec Core LC
    sc delete Symantec Core LC

Create a new HijackThis log and post it here.

    Hi Noahdfair:

Great news - Searches are now fixed so it appears we're nearing the end of the trail.......thanks again to you and the the others who've helped. One problem remains though - I ran msconfig but couldn't find the three files
(i.e. CLTNetCnService, ccSetMgr, ccEvtMgr) you wanted me to recheck. I looked in startups and services but no luck.

I didn't want to foul anything up so I stopped there (i.e. haven't run the two commands nor created a new HJT log yet). Should I proceed?

My mistake. Those are probably items unchecked on the Services tab of msconfig, not the Startup tab.

Nope, they're not on either tab (startup or services).

Located two files (CCSETMGR.exe and CCEVTMGR.exe). Both are in
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared.

    No CLTNetCnService though

You can safely delete that Symantec Shared folder.

If you're comfortable editing the registry, you could just delete those three entries from the following key.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\services]
    "CLTNetCnService "=2 (0x2)
    "ccSetMgr "=2 (0x2)
    "ccEvtMgr "=2 (0x2)

They really aren't hurting anything though since they are just disabled registry items. Removing them would only be in the interest of tidying up.

Please post a new HijackThis log.

Hi Noahdfear and perhaps for the last time.......at least for awile:

I'm never comfortable editing the registry but I did it anyway and all seems well.

I really appreciate the excellent support I've recieved from WindowsBBS and I'll doubtless have occasion to call on you again.

    Best regards,

Dave...................(please see the HJT log below).
