    Hi,

I have a HP4050 laser printer on my local network. I want to add this printer to an XP machine. I go into the Control Panels and click Add Printer.

The address of the printer is 192.168.123.141. I tried "192.168.123.141" and "http://192.168.123.141" and Windows can't find the printer.

I logged into my Asante router and it shows a 'name' for that address of "dhcppc8 ". I tried that. Windows can't see it.

I KNOW there is a way to do this....what am I doing wrong (I'll take the blame, even through it should be easier to add a printer to Windows)...

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Click add Printer.

    Add Local Printer

    Create New Port

    TCP/IP Port

Type in IP address and walk the rest of the way through the Wizzard.

You may want to print a Configuration on the 4050 first to verify your IP is correct. Menu/Toggle twice to the right\Select

And at the "Add Local Printer" step take the tick out of the box "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer ".

Thanks for the replys guys. I figured it out this morning. I was seleting the wrong option apperantly.

Windows considers "Local printer attached to this computer" to include local TCP/IP network printers apperantly [even if they are NOT "attached to this computer"].

    I was selecting....
"A network printer, or printer attached to another computer "
....not sure why it still wouldn't let me enter the printers IP address there. But I got it working.

    Thanks!
    Jeff

If you have a server and especially if your printer is set up in Active Directory, then the "Network Printer" option works and works well. However, most small networks are peer to peer and don't have the services set up to work that way easily. Adding the printer as local printer is a simple way to get around that problem. You create a TCP/IP port and that sorts out the network connection to the printer. You then connect "locally" to the TCP/IP port.

It no surprise then that it wasn't obvious to you - its a strange way to go about things.

Glad you got there - well done.
