It never rains but it pours.

Can't get any sound. Even when I change the volume control. However, when I try the system sounds like "asterick ", etc., the sound is loud and clear! Have tried it with the external speakers and SoundMax Digital Audio ... and also with headphones with proper Sound Playback device.

    Hi, Chuck. :)

I am confused about when you "can't get any sound" and how you "try the system sounds like "asterick ", etc., the sound is loud and clear!" What are you doing when you "can't get any sound "? How did you test the "system sounds "?

I Googled no sound windows xp and got over 65 million results. Perhaps one of the following links will lead to a resolution.

What is the source of the sound you are unable to hear - files on the hard drive, on CD/DVD or ????

    Hi guys,

In Sounds and Audio Devices, tab Volume under Advanced , if I move the Speaker volume, there is no sound. At tab Sounds, if I highlight the asterick, etc. and click on right arrow next to Browse , the sound is loud and clear. Obviously, if I don't get a response when adjusting the speaker volume, I get no sound from anything ... CD, Sound Recorder, etc.

    Hi Mailman,

Didn't see the troubleshooting links at the end of your message till after I sent the previous reply. Don't know if they are pertinent since I can hear the system sounds but will try them as soon as I can get my wife off her computer ... and after breakfast out here in Seattle.

Thanks for your follow-up. :) Glad your sound issue is (sort of) resolved.

Was there a reboot since the problem existed? If so, perhaps the reboot took care of the glitch somehow.

EDIT: Event Viewer might shed some light too.

Don't remember. I rebooted numerous times to try and resolve the problem but that hadn't worked before. It probably just needed some rest overnight.
