Most often created by ISP provided software. It will likely contain the files that help with configuration of the connection. Take a peek inside. What files are there? Check the properties of some. What company makes them?

    support.com

It has several main folders, the main one is 'backup', about 74 mbs, and 'help', 'lserver', 'version', 'bin', 'html' and 'vault'. The backup folder has many folders with each of them 1 kb files which cannot even be opened (except perhaps with some special software). As I am using this laptop on a wireless connection I am not even directly connected directly to an ISP (my main computer is). This laptop is losing space fast; in just a few weeks it has lost 600 mbs; now it has only 400 mbs left on the c drive. It's a Sony with 20 gb hard drive and only 8 mbs are allotted for the c drive the other 10 or so gbs are partitioned as d drive. Each time it takes a lot of work to get back the space close to 1 gb by cleaning up. What gobbles up most of the space in simple day-to-day operation?

Can I get rid of the support.com by simply deleting the folder? In the ADD/REMOVE programs there is an item called Support Actions win2K and winxp with 92 mbs space listed. It's perhaps that program. Could I uninstall that?

You could look in the registry under the following key,
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
The subkeys there represent installed programs, and there will generally be information as to the location of the installation files, and the name by which it is displayed in Add/Remove. Once you find the path to the support.com folder, your chances of identifying it with a particular program increases.

As for space disappearing ......... do you regularly empty temps files, temporary internet files, history, clean up system restore points, etc?

    support.com

I did follow through your suggestions: I couldn't find anything relating to support.com under the registry entry you have mentioned. But I am suspecting it is related to the Restoring of files, because when I deleted restore files (all except the current one) the size of the folder shrunk somewhat.

Your suggestions about restore files etc. saved plenty of space. I have installed the windows sp2 (which I had removed before for lack of space) and now I have moved all the uninstall files (amounting about 670 mbs) to the d: drive and am still left with 1.15 gb space on the c: drive. Not bad!

Of course, I do the periodic disc cleanup etc. But the windows automatic updates are what were taking up quite a bit of space. But I think I have a handle over the situation.

Your suggestions were very helpful, thank you.
