Now, I know approximately when I will reinstall the OS on my old BOAC! I wonder if IE7 can be left out of the picture?

Hi Chtister
Who knows - but what's wrong with IE 7? I have been running that since the beta days.

Anyway IE 8 looms :) - not quite the same timescale, but ....

Is Internet Explorer 8 in the works?

Myself, I don't dig IE7 so when SP3 is released I guess I'll build a custom XP iso w/out IE7. Easily done using an app like nLite.

PeteC,

Old story covered in an earlier thread. When I installed IE7, Acrobat Distiller 5.0 no longer worked well with Microsoft Access. The "improved" printing function in IE7 is most likely the culprit. I went back to IE6 and haven't missed IE7 for a second.

TonyT,

I'll have to read up on that ... ... !

SP3 would be an encouragement for me to get my system up to date.

I quit fooling with the updates over 1½ years ago and haven't missed the aggravation at all. :)

Me too, the only update I installed in the last year was the daylight savings time fix.

Dave, let's just say I think a lot of it is Quixotic in nature and there seems to be better ways to protect my system. :D

I'm too old to waste time on such things.

When you see me posting up for help in the Spyware forum, then you can make sport of me. ;)

hey hey!
I haven't run an auto-protect antivirus in 8 years either. And honestly, the only reason I update my antivirus-antimalware tools is cause I need 'em to fix client systems!

Don't take it to heart guys. I just couldn't resist. Believe me, there's not a doubt in my mind that either of you could remove literally anything on your own, yet know full well that the likelihood of it ever even being necessary is next to nothing ... education goes a long way. I just found it ironic, and hilarious, that while over in the malware forum we're pounding MS updates into folks to help them stay protected, two of our most knowledgeable members, in a topic focused on the pending release of a service pack, pass off the importance of installing the updates that address the many many security vulnerabilities as trivial and un-necessary. Most of our readers need those updates as they become available, and I'd just hate to see them get the wrong message, then go off thinking they don't. ;)

Indeed Dave, I never took it to heart and I knew you were poking in jest. Furthermore, I would never disparage the work that you do.

My philosophy is, there are lots of pitfalls out there and it's wise to protect youself in any way that works for you. There are two ways to do that and both of them take an inordinate amount of time.

You can either spend the time downloading and installing the stuff from MS (and occasionally working out the kinks) or else spend the time necessary to give you the insight to make do without those downloads.

Either way takes a lot of time and effort but I think the latter may be more productive in the long haul.

I throw no stones at either method however, to each his own.

I commend you Dave for going the extra mile on so many occasions and performing absolute miracles that nobody but you could in restoring the systems of folks who have chosen the former method (or no method at all).

All the best,

Dude

I too knew the context of your post, er..there were smilies!

While I am to some degree and expert computer user, I DO NOT recommend that others shy away from Microsoft Updates, esp the security updates.

This is for those reading this thread who do not know how to easily remove malware & viruses on their computers, and who also wish to prevent the majority of infections:

use Windows Automatic Updates or visit Microsoft Update Web site regularly!

The only reason I install the updates is to find out if they cause problems. When they do I can warn others. Now if only the updates would fail for me as they do for others, knock on wood. :D
