1.6.0_02 is the only one you need. Uninstall all other versions, then delete their respective folders if left behind. Old versions of Java left installed are exploitable, despite not being used.

BTW, clicking on your image link caused two things that distress me.

    1. Opened a prompt to run activeX control
    2. Caused my eTrust Realtime monitor to pop up telling me it had deleted an infection. I opened the link twice to make sure that it was the cause.

    8/4/2007 10:24:38 AM File infection: E:\Documents and Settings\Dave\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\7QT8XBN3\oiytrrwadtryuo[1].htm is JS/MS06-014!exploit trojan.
    8/4/2007 10:25:15 AM File infection: E:\Documents and Settings\Dave\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S5YV81Q7\file[1].exe is Win32/Chepvil!generic trojan.

Suggest you remove the link above, and refrain from using that host until it can be researched a bit.

Uninstall all but the last one - 1.6.0_2

Then check the exact version in Control Panel > Java - the latest is 1.6.0_2_bl06

I have many entries for J2SE runtime environment:
    5.0 update 10
    5.0 update 11
    5.0 update 6
    5.0 update 9

    I also have 2 entries for Java(TM):
    6 update 2
    6 update 1

    Is J2SE the same as Java(TM) ?

Should I delete all the J2SE listed except 5.0 update 11?
Should I also delete all the Java(TM) listed except 6 update 2?

I thought I read somewhere that you may need the old versions, can't remember the details, or where I read it.

They are basically the same when applied to normal computer usage. They install the Java runtime so that Java based applications will work for you. Old versions of Java (JRE and JSE) are vulnerable to being exploited, even if they are not active on the system. All old versions should be uninstalled and their files deleted from the C:\Program Files\Java folder.

So should I uninstall all versions of J2SE and all versions of Java(TM) and then just install the latest Java from their website? Not worry about the J2SE?
Or is there a place to get the latest version of that too?

'They install the Java runtime so that Java based applications will work for you.' By they do you mean the Java applet update option installs the Java runtime?

By they, I was referring to both JRE and JSE.

Uninstalling all versions, then completely emptying the C:\Program Files\Java folder would be a good way to make sure you have the latest. You can get it here and it's the only one you need. ;)

While the advise of using only the latest version of Java is good, there are many programs that only work with certain versions of Java. The newer JRE actually may not execute the code properly, especially if Java swing forms are used. Therefore I would recommend having the latest version of each major version of Java installed. i.e. 1.4.2, 1.5.0, and 1.6.0.
This advise comes from the last two years of programming in Java, and personal experience with Java applets and swing applications.

Do you have a list of programs that won't work properly with the latest Java? Can you at least give us a few examples? As I pointed out, old versions of Java have known exploits and can be used to compromise one's computer whether active or not, so keeping them around unless absolutely necessary is not advised.
