After working fine, won't open. The blue window displays then disappears.
I tried re-installing from the windows xp disk which has Explorer and Outlook express 6 (from Dell Dimension 2350). re-install fails saying that you must uninstall previous installation. Windows Add-remove list doesn't show it, so I can't un-install.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
    thanks, berniek4

    berniek4 - Welcome to the Board :)

Start by running through the steps outlined in An Outlook Express Basic Repair kit with particular reference to re-registering OE and it's library files.

    no solution yet.

Thankyou PeteC. I went through the outlined steps. The instructions seem to rely on the outlook window being open, the problem is, it is not present. The start panel flashes on and then disappears. The problem may have started after I applied a Registry fix using "Max Registry Fix "

Did you reregister Outliiok Express and the Library files - this does not require OE to be open?
Unwise with hindsight :) - best to leave the Registry well alone. However did Max Registry (never heard of it BTW) make a backup of changes it made? If so restore it.

    Reregistering OE .....

Restoring changes on Max Registry didn't help

I did actuate "reverse changes" on Max Reg. It didn't help.
How does one "reregister" Outlook express? I can see where OE is located with Windows Explorer. It appears on C:/programfiles/outlookexpress/msimn.exe, etc.
So I don't understand why OE doesn't show on Control Panel, ADD/Delete list so I could delete it.

That is explained in the article URL I posted ....
You cannot uninstall/delete Outlook Express - or Internet Explorer - hence they do not show in Add/Remove Programs. (Rider - if you have installed IE 7 there should be an entry to remove Windows Internet Explorer 7 - uninstalling 7 reverts back to 6)

Outlook Express in integrated into Internet Explorer which in turn is integrated into Windows. Neither is a standalone program.

    problem solved

I went through the suggested procedures to no avail. However, I was reading some other blogs of people with similar outlook problems, and one person noted that his roommate using the same computer but a different "Entity" accessed it fine. This gave me the idea of creating a new identity, and sure enough outlook booted up as though it was newly installed. I then had to import the address book and messages from the files, and I'm back in business. The old identity still has the problem. I intend to delete that eventually.
    thanks for your troubles

Thanks for the update - that was one possibility which did not come to mind.
