I am trying to import Outlook Express messages from one XP computer to another using external hard drive. I loaded the folder from the export machine which showed all the folders and files, but the import machine is only showing about two thirds of the folders and files after importing. Any suggestions?

Try again.....You might create the folder in OE first, then import again.

    Another method .....

Copy/paste the *.dbx files from the external drive and paste them into the location shown under tools > Options > Maintenance - Store Folder.

Do not move the files otherwise your backup is gone if anything fouls up.

    Outlook express backups

I have exactly the same problem. I want to pass an OE folder emails from my desktop to my laptop. When I place the .dbx file in the folder the laptop OE does not see the file. It seems to be the same as the others (bar the name) but is not recognised. Similarly if I try to import the file from a backup directory OE (laptop) doesn't see it. I have tried many different methods but to no avail....

    Does anyone have any answer?

charco - Welcome to the Board :)

Have you tried copy/paste as suggested in my last post to the thread originator?

Check if the folder in question has acquired the Read Only attribute and, if so, remove it.

What is the size of this folder? OE does not play nice with large folders - 2Gb is the official limit, but problems can occur at sizes below this.

    The folder may be corrupted.

If you make a new folder on the desktop computer and move 50% of the files to it can you then import the folders to the laptop?

    Ta for the welcome..

I haven't tried splitting the folder into smaller folders and it is rather large (about 2000 emails), however it's a bit late in the night to fire up the desktop so I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you all know how I get on.

    Thanks for the rapid response

To check the size of the folder(s) you will need to search for *.dbx files - include hidden files and folders in your search.

With the nominal 2 Gb limit - that's probably the cause of your problem :)

Try a 3 way split and see if the laptop cooperates.

Maybe I will export to Microsoft Outlook and then try to transfer the files from there...

OK that's the way to do it...

    1. Import to Microsoft Outlook from OE
    2. Export from MO as *.pst files
    3. Carry files to laptop and import to MO
    4. Import to OE

    :D

    Thanks for your help everyone

Glad to hear you found a workaround - but beware folders around 2 Gb in OE :)
