I have a problem connecting to my university's wireless. I go online, and every five minutes I am logged out. Then the computer starts searching for an available wireless again and the bullet says "authentification attempt" and repeatedly, a field pops open where I have to enter my user id/ password over and over again ... It sometimes also says "limited or no connectivity ". I googled the latter and it said that this was a specific Windows XP bug. I downloaded the Microsoft Update on that one (I have XP) but the wireless still doesn't work smoothly. Any ideas?

The IT person at my university checked it and couldn't detect anything. Perhaps some ideas might help him (and me) to find the problem. It's so frustrating!! I have never had any problems with my notebook and the wireless before!

    check out the basics first

is that the only location you have the problem?
does it happen on other wireless networks?
how far from the closest antenna are you, are you locked into the right channel?
have you tried from different places on campus?

these were issues i had to check out also.

also find a good geek who is willing to spend time on your system, sometimes the school IT group can be over whelmed with the new freshman and returnees who have exposed their systems to the outside world.
    good luck

What kind of laptop? Are you using the built in wireless card? What operating system?

Some cards don't like to play well with some DHCP servers/routers. It sounds possible that the DHCP server is trying to renew and it can't. I suspect repairing the connection temporarily resolves the problem?

Do this: Goto Start -> Run, then type CMD to drop you into a command prompt.

    Type ipconfig /all

Under the wireless adapter settings (first tell me what kind of adapter) what is the lease start and end times?
