My son gave me a Compac Presario 5000 after he bought a new system. It had XP on it, but I'd like to put 98SE on it. Can that be done, if so How?
Setup recognizes Samsung 20gb hd, but then says non-system disk. It won't recognize the 98SE disk ether.

The most likely scenario is that the drive is formatted NTFS, a disk format that 98 cannot 'see'.

You will need to format the drive FAT32 before installing 98SE.

It won't recognise fat32 or the 98SE disk. Setup shows the disk and the size, but when I continue it says non systems disk, whether there is any floppy in it or not.

We may be at cross purposes here .....
CD or 98 Startup disk (floppy)?

What is the format of the XP install? Right click on the drive in My computer > Properties.

    Old OS

    Hi PetC
It came with XP. I took that HD out and put in a 20gb HD that 98SE on it. Wouldn't work that way, so I formated the 20gb hd and tried again. Same results. Tried 98 3 1/2" floppy start up disk and full version of 98SE CD. Nether, all came up with the same results (non-system disk). I figured it would runn 98, but begaining to wonder.

Some things I have run into myself and with family.

Are you sure that the machine ( BIOS ? ) is set to boot to the FLOPPY FIRST ? And try from a POWER OFF state.

No surprise that hitching up a disk with 98 installed failed to work :)

Have you checked the connections to the HD - jumpers set as Master?

How did you format it? If you have a Windows boot disk (www.bootdisk.com if you have not) use fdisk to remove the existing partition and create a new one and format and try again.

Alternatively you could format the XP drive and start from there.

    Old OS

    Thanks Fellows,
I think you may have helped me find the problem. I put my startup disk in the xp computer and said it wasn't formated. I dug around and found another and tried it in the compac and looks like I might be able to get it going. If I have any more trouble I'll be back.
I think I'll try putting back the old system on the HHD and use the startup disk and windows CD to get it running. If not I'll start from scrach.
    Thanks for the help.

Sorry I'm so slow at these simple mistakes.

the xp drive is most likely formatted with ntsf - windows 98 cannot see it
ask here how to fdisk the drive
then format for windows 98 install
should be fairly standard after that

    format ntsf drive

    Why make life complex
    1) how to tell if drive is ntsf
    - boot from windows 98 disk diskette or self booting cd
    at dos prompt
    type format c:
If cannot see drive - then it is ntsf not fat 32 ( windows 98 cannot see it)

    2) At that dos prompt
    type fdisk
4 will also tell you same thing
    type 3 - delete a partition
4 is non dos ( ntsf)
    1 is fat 32

    After deleting partition
    reboot
    create partition
    go through the paces
    then let windows 98 install
it will format the drive in its install
always best to keep it simple and standard
