About a week ago, my computer quit accessing Internet Explorer. We are running XP Media Edition. Every time I click on the icon, it gives me a, "there was a problem opening up Internet Explorer, send or don't send message ". Instant messaging, and games with icons on the desktop are accessible and still working though (like partypoker.net).

I have cleared the cookies, history etc., ran a disk clean up, defragmented, scanned for viruses (McAfee) and ran checkdisk. There was no difference. Not sure how to remove Internet Explorer to re-install it because it isn't in 'Add or Remove Programs'. Thinking that might fix the issue. Hooked up to the cable modem with a laptop and everything worked fine, so I know the modem and connection is working. Is this a registry issue...? I'm not real familiar with that side of computers. At the end of my string of computer knowledge, and needing some help????

Important to tackle problems on a step by step basis - one thing at a time :) If the first proposed solution does not work - on to the next - if there is one :)

    IEFix.exe

Ran IEFix.exe and used C:\i386 as the path (not the XP cd, because I'm not sure what to do). Re-booted the computer and still no luck. Our computer is a DELL, and thought about using their helpdesk but, it is out of warranty. Any ideas?? Thank you.

I also, just tried to start in safe mode and internet explorer opened but, said could'nt find server. Not sure if this is normal or not....

I am not sure that C:\i386 would necessarily contain the required information - it depends on the size of that folder which should be of the order of 550 Mb - there can be instances where it is much smaller. To be on the safe side try the direct method .....

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and check Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Then go to the Windows directory C:\Windows and double click on it to open and scroll down to the inf folder - double click on it to open and scroll down to ie.inf - right click on it and in the menu list which opens click on Install.

If IE still fails to open in normal mode the problem may be with an IE Add-on. Disable all add-ons as described here ....

Control Internet Explorer Add-ons with Add-on Manager

If IE then opens re-enable each add-on in turn, closing and re-opening IE in between each add-on which is re-enabled until the culprit is found.

If IE does not open with all add-ons disabled we will have to think again.

When you have finished go in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and check Do not show Hidden Files and Folders.

BTW - in Safe Mode you will not be able to connect to the internet - in Safe Mode with Networking you should be able to.

    Firefox

Thanks for all your help. I just got tired of the issue and installed Mozilla Firefox on the computer. It is working fine. Thank you again for your efforts.
