Find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

I got the following from Microsoft. Maybe it will work for you.
    TIP: Windows Update failed

Step 1: Check the following services:
Automatic Updates. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). Event Log
Make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic ". Then click "Start" under "Service Status" to start this service.
Step 2: Rename temporary folder SoftwareDistribution
Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Type net stop WuAuServ GotoWindows. Rename the folder
SoftwareDistribution to SDold. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Type net start WuAuServ
Go to the Windows Update site to test this issue. If the error persists, please go to the following suggestion.
    Suggestion 3: Rename CatRoot2 folder
Close all the open windows. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter. Locate and open the System32
folder. Find the CatRoot2 folder, right-click, and RENAME to CR2OLD.
Step 4: Check the Internet Explorer settings:
Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options. Click Use blank. Delete cookies and Delete files on the
General tab. Clear History, and click OK in the dialog box. Click Settings, View Objects, delete all objects there,
and close the window. Click View Files, delete all files there, and close the window. On the Connections tab, click
LAN Settings button, and uncheck all boxes. On Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults button, and clear the
checkbox beside "Enable third-party extensions ". On security tab, click each of the four kinds of sites in the
security settings and then click the "default level" button. Click OK to save these settings. Then, go to Windows
Update site to test the issue. Disable anti-virus programs, Firewalls and ad-blockers. You can re-enable these
programs once installation of the updates is completed. If the problem persists, go to step 5.
    Step 5: Register components
Click Start, Run, type the following command and click OK after each roll. You are expected to receive a
successful confirmation after running each command:
    NET.EXE STOP WUAUSERV
    REGSVR32 /S ATL.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S WUAPI.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S WUAUENG.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S WUAUENG1.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S WUCLTUI.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S WUPS.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S MSXML3.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S MSSIP32>DLL
    REGSVR32 /S INITPKI.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S WUWEB.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S JSCRIPT.DLL
    REGSVR32 /S SOFTPUB.DLL
    NET.EXE START WUAUSERV
Try to access the Windows Update site again.
Step 6: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
Download the file from the following link.
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Step 7: Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1
    Click Start, Run, type CMD,OK.
In command line type: MSIexec /unregister, Enter.
In the command line type: MSIexec /regserver, Enter.
Try Update. If it does not work, uninstall Windows Installer 3.1. Download the file from the following link.

    Not sure

I'm not sure if that stuff worked because I couldn't rename the catroot2 folder and i didn't get to the many rows of commands. i had to do a restart and when windows shut down, the updates installed. i'm now all caught up. i guess we'll find out when a new update comes out.

I've now found a new problem:

I don't have access to my workgroup anymore. I have a wireless network at home with a printer hooked to my pc. I can't print anything to it or see the other computers in the workgroup (familypc and bobslaptop). I'm working from my laptop. Any help? or should I start a new thread?

If one thing in there works, stick with it. I have found that it requires different things for different problems. Cannot hurt if you try all things for different problems. Suggest you keep the information. Glad if it helps.
