yes I am trying, but still having problems. When I get to the login screen (in safe mode or normal) it is still rebooting. After a few tries it will accept the login info and start in safe mode. I am still getting the nt/authority shutdown... I typed the command you suggested and it goes away for a minute or two but then comes back... I am also still getting the spyware infection notice from windows. As well as the message from windows telling me that the virtual memory is too low. Also looked for ms blast.exe I didn't see it in the window. Tried running spysweeper to get ride of that error, but it freezes up (no mouse or keyboard function, just a hourglass that is flickering, not turning as if working)

Once you get logged on again, click Start>Run or open Task manager and click File>New Task (run), then enter the following command and hit enter.

    sc failure RpcSs reset=30 actions=restart/500/reboot/600000

See if it helps keep the computer from shutting down long enough to run SmitfraudFix.

It does have support for French ....... I'll have to do some checking as to why it ran that way. Were you able to figure out what to do despite the language and run the tool?

    EDIT
Runs in French if L is selected at the main menu.

no it didn't look at all like it did when I ran it on this computer, I am not sure since my french is more than a little bit rusty, but I think it didn't work at all. It looked more like german though, not french

Did you transfer SmitfraudFix to the ailing computer's hard drive, or try to run it from floppy? It should be saved to the desktop and run from there.

mva5493, would it be possible for you to take out the hard disk from your current computer & connect it to another computer which has updated anti virus & malware definitions.

Sometimes if the infection is very bad, this is the 2nd step before formatting the drive & loading Windows again.

I downloaded it to this computer, then put it on cd an ran on the other system.

This computer is the only other available at the moment, and I really don't want to attach that hd to this computer.

would formatting the hd and reinstalling windows fix this? There is some data on the other hd I am trying to salvage, i don't want to reformat if it is possible to fix without doing so.

Try transfering it from the cd to the desktop and run it from there ....... use copy/paste rather than Send To.

Provided there isn't some other hardware issue, yes, format and clean install should resolve the issues. You would certainly need to get the data off first.

will try copy/paste and see what happens
beginning to think re-installation is not a bad idea.

making progress I think, I copied to hd, and then ran smitfraud...it ran as it should after I told it to clean, I was able to log into windows normally with no hang ups or reboots. But once windows started up I got the low virtual memory error again. I did notice that cpu usage is 100%. Also getting error msg: tmntsrv.exe needed to close, and the option send microsoft a log. after clicking don't sent i get another window that says windows has recovered from a serious error, send/ don't send report (microsfoft)

    Progress ...... that's good. :)

tmntsrv.exe is part of Trend Micro antivirus. Not good that it's closing, but not totally unexpected either.

I think it's time we see what all is present RE: infections. Please start a new topic in the Removing Spyware & Viruses section. Please include a link back to this topic, along with the following requested logs.

    1. SmitfraudFix log, located at C:\rapport.txt
    2. HijackThis log. Instructions here
    3. Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to the desktop.
    Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of main.txt only for now.

No. What I have recommended for use are for the most part, scanning tools.

I am trying to run the programs, but the virtual memory problems is causing lots of freezing or terminating of programs. Is there anything I can do to increase the virtual memory?

It's quite possible that you have several processes (maybe rogue) that are causing the problem with VM. Open the Task Manager to the processes tab and End process on those that are listed for the user account (not System, Local Service or Network Service) that you don't recognize as necessary, such as explorer.exe, iexplore.exe, etc. If that doesn't help, Click Start>Run, type msconfig and hit enter. On the Startup tab, uncheck anything listed that is not a necessary program for operation. Click OK and OK agin, allowing the computer to restart.

I don't know what is going on with this machine but now it is rebooting at startup again. Also I am getting blue screen of death, with the error message
    driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

also, when I tried to close iexplore in taskmanager, when I click on it end process changes to gray and iexplore moves in the list (I assume that is not really internet explorer, since it is not running)

Try to run the scans in safe mode.
