    Hi,
Have just assembled a new PC as follows
    Motherboard - Asus M2R32-MVP
    CPU - AMD Athlon64 5200+X2 Dual Core
Sata Hard Drive - Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 400gig
Video Card - Asus ATI Radion X1650 512mb
    Memory - 2 X 1gig DDR2-533
OS - Windows Vista Premium 64bit OEM

OS seems to install OK untill the log in screen where the keyboard becomes sluggish when inputting password.
Welcome screen appears frozen for approx 10 mins (no cursor) then changes to preparing descktop screen (again no cursor)
Sometimes the desktop (I guess) screen appears again frozen but I note that the time on the clock is also frozen and 15 to 20 mins slow.
The copy of Vista is an OEM version and I note on the outer package for the disk that the software should be installed with an OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) which I don't have.
I wonder if this is likely to be the problem with my installation?

I've no experience with the OEM version, so I can't help you there... Only suggestion I have is to try running the Startup Repair option (off the Vista DVD).

Thanks for your suggestion, I have tried repeatedly to repair and re-install, neither are successful, am currently attempting to download the OPK Tools file from Microsoft, 983mb in size, so is taking it's time.

When I installed Vista I could tell the drivers were not working correctly so I found specific Vista updates for all of them (my dialup modem manufacturer says they are "coming" :)).

I have an an nVidia based SLI motherboard and found that the drivers for my chipset were "general" ones.

I looked at the Asus website for your model, they have Vista drivers for LAN and audio, but I cannot see specific chipset drivers.

You have a Crossfire based motherboard. See if there are Vista drivers for your chipset model at AMD.

Check your network settings/LAN drivers (only because you mention it is occuring at logon).

Your system sounds like it should run "OEM" Vista (without a 900+ MB download :) ). OEM should mean that it is tied to one computer, you can upgrade, but only to the extent that it does not become a different computer.

Hi thanks for the further suggestions
I have downloaded the OPK, used it to create the auto-unattend answer fire, vista will install using this but still is freezing after the log on screen.
Have downloaded latest drivers for motherboard, lan etc. but don't know how to install them without windows running! Will try to disable lan and audio in the bios and see what happens.
    ain't computers fun!

See if these files contains any error messages:

    C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setuperr.log

    C:\WINDOWS\INF\setupapi.dev.log

    C:\WINDOWS\Performance\Winsat\winsat.log

mmm!...not exactly helpful. I find OEMs work to (uh) a limited extent. Should they not work?

OEMs, they are tied to one "computer ". If you have a nice computer and expect to upgrade it, and then upgrade to another compter, get retail. The OEM is limited and I would use it if I was not planning to do much upgrading of my system in the future.

    Matt
Maybe you are thinking of OEM computer manufacturers, not the OEM version of Windows (if you buy the parts for a computer youself, you are then entitled to purchase Windows OEM).

OK, sorry for the delay in closing this thread, problem was that the motherboard bios was NOT compatible with Vista as new, ie out of the box. Solution was to install 32bit XP, download and flash the bios, format drive and re-install 64bit Vista, phew!
All appears fine now, thanks for all the advice:)

Well done on your detective work :) Getting a system "settled down" with Vista at this early stage may take a little effort (upgrade-wise), mine has settled down well.

OPK tools are a waste of time, unless you want an unattended install. If you have any problems with installing from an OEM disk, it is probably hardware related. Compatability is not Vista's strong area, after all.
