    Hi,

I have a DVD RW +/- ML drive, which up until recently worked fine. Now, the computer doesn't recognize discs when they are in it. And when I try and burn things thru Windows Explorer, it says "there is no disc in the drive."

At first, I thought it may be a defective drive. But then my neighbor's computer is having the same problem about a week later, so I'm thinking it may be a Windows Update gone bad. Anyone know of which update I should look for, if this is the problem?

    Thanks,
    -ProwlingTiger

ProwlingTiger - Welcome to the Board :)

Unlikely to have been caused by an update ....

My Computer- right click on DVD-RW drive > Properties > Recording Tab - is 'Enable CD burning on ....' checked?

If you are using XP's native burning facility be aware that this does not support burning to DVD's.

Yes, the recording tab is enabled. I've tried everything, upper and lower filters, regedit...you name it. I'm trying to burn to a cd-r but it gives me an error saying there is no cd in the drive.

Win Update is the only thing I can think of that would cause multiple computers to simultaneously have this problem--they were within a few days of each other.

Have you tried uninstalling the drive through Device Manager and rebooting?

I have seen no posts on this Board or in any of the newsletters I receive to the effect that a Windows Update has fouled up CD writing, but that is not to say that it may not happen in specific cases.

The problem on your neighbour's computer may be pure coincidence.

You appear to have covered the usual troubleshooting methods for this - it is time to check out the existing drive by substitution with another.

Sorry for the stupid question but have you run a antivirus/malware scan on your computer? Have you checked the cables?
