I'm trying to use a USB memory stick on my IBM ThinkPad laptop running Windows 98. My laptop does not have a driver for a USB mass storage device, and I cannot find a driver on the Internet. Is there such a driver? I found one for Windows 98 SE, but not Windows 98.

    Thanks.

Did you try the 98se driver?

Guessing you looked on the web site of the company that made the drive?

I tried the Windows 98 SE driver. It did not work.

The device is just a 128 MB memory stick I got for free someplace. I use it on my other computers, but cannot use it or other memory sticks on my laptop. No driver.

Maybe Windows 98 is just too old to handle USB memory sticks. It would not seem to be that hard, though.

    Do other USB devices work?

You may need to update your chipset drivers.

I use a USB mouse all the time. So that works. I think what is missing is a driver for an external storage device. And I am not sure where to find one.

What I called a memory stick I should have called a flash drive. I have found three or four drivers for Windows 98 SE, none of which would on my laptop. Maybe there is none for Windows 98.

    I'll keep looking, though.

The company that made the drive is the one that is responsible for drivers...If they never made any then there aren't any to be found.

You could look on other maker's web sites and maybe get lucky using theirs...

    The answer is no.
Windows 98 se added drivers that are needed for such device support.
Best to upgrade to windows 98 se if you wish to use these devices

    USB windows 98 driver

I have a disk that goes all the way back to windows 3.1 for any driver, what type of flash drive are you trying to plug in and what is its model #? for windows 98 driver you might want to try this if the manufacturer did not supply you with the driver "http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ced4fa25-952b-4dab-b7a1-f3b0ec1e50d8&DisplayLang=en "

Just had a blinding flash (ouch! fried a few more brain cells :D )

If you put the drive into a Win XP (or maybe a 2000) computer, it should read the plug and play information. Go to Device Manager or click Safely Remove Hardware in the Notification Tray (formerly known as the System Tray) and select Stop, it should list the "model ". Example, my generic is a UT_USB20 drive.

    Try www.driverguide.com (free registration).
