I am having a problem with AVI files in Windows XP. When I click (once) on an AVI file just to highlight it windows gives me the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." With the choices to click Debug, Send Error Report or Don't Send.

This just started recently. Up to that point everything worked fine. I can play MOV files, WAV file and so on with no problems. Media player opens and plays the WAV files no problem.

    Any ideas?

One more thing I noticed is that I no longer have the "hide inactive icons" in the taskbar. Dont know if that is unrelated or not.

Dont have it, at least that I know of. I didnt install anything like that. How can I tell if it is there, do i need it (i'm not a gamer) and should I remove it if it is there to get rid of my problem?

Nothing we can do with the information we have.

It sure sounds like a 3rd party shell extension causing it.

    What info do you need?
I didnt install anything new before the problem started. Maybe the only change was a little while ago when I updated iTunes, it also installs Quicktime. Other than that I have no ideal.

Should I remove all 3rd party shell extensions?

    codecs?

try installing the xvid codec, google: download xvid
Explorer tries to display a thumbnail when you click on an AVI, maybe overwriting the dodgy codec will fix it.....

ShellExView allows you to disable extensions, so yes, go & disable all 3rd party (= non MS) shell extensions. See if that fixes the problem.

If it does, re-enable one 3rd party shell extension at a time, until you find the one that is causing the problem.

    Arie,
I already did that and it did not fix the problem.

now I am trying what Bytmee said and installed xvid. I have to reboot and see if that worked.

OK, here is the latest. I used ShellExView v1.16 - Shell Extensions Manager and disabled video thumbnail extractor, which is a microsoft extension.

that has solved the problem of windows explorer crapping out when I highlight (single click) or double click and avi file. If I double click an avi file now windows media player opens BUT gives me a similar error. "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." With the choices to click Debug, Send Error Report or Don't Send.

I also have a screen capture of that error if anyone wants to see it.

As you are not a Contributing Member - recommended, you need to upload to a site such as Photobucket and post the URL here.

OK, it seems that I have fixed it.
Like I said above I used ShellExView v1.16 - Shell Extensions Manager and disabled video thumbnail extractor, which is a microsoft extension to get the windows explorer error to go away.

Then I removed the K-Lite Codec Pack from the system using add remove programs and everything works. Until the next windows ***** up ...

Thanks to all that have helped!!!
    :)
