Is there any good Anti-Virus programs out there that won't hassle me, and slow my system down? I'm tired of programs like Mcaffe that take over my computer.

    Thanks for any advice.

I use NOD32 on the XP desktop - works with Vista too - probably the best AV around and AVG Free on my Vista tower and XP laptop. Neither will 'take over' your computer.

Lot depends on how much you want to pay - nothing or a few $$ :)

    Avast, OneCare

Avast has a good one that works well with Vista 32 and MicroSoft has a New one that won't work with Avast called OneCare. Avast is Free for 14 Months and OneCare is trial for 90 days. Your call.

I'd steer a mile clear of OneCare! It's not 'up-to-par'.

Check: ICSA labs May 2007 Testing Report

    Code:
    [B]Desktop/Server Monthly Cleaning[/B]
Computer Ass.	CA Anti-Virus Vista 32-bit	Pass
    Kaspersky	Anti-virus Vista 32-bit	Pass
McAfee VirusScan Plus Vista 32-bit	Pass
    Microsoft OneCare Vista 32-bit	Fail
Symantec	Norton AntiVirus	Vista 64-bit	Pass

    [B]Desktop/Server Monthly Detection[/B]
Computer Ass.	CA Anti-Virus Vista 32-bit	Pass
Computer Ass.	eTrust Vista 32-bit	Pass
Computer Ass.	eTrust AV Vista 64-bit	Pass
    Eset Nod32 2.7 Vista 64-bit	Pass
    Grisoft AVG Vista 32-bit	Pass
    Grisoft AVG Vista 64-bit	Pass
    Kaspersky	Anti-virus Vista 32-bit	Pass
McAfee VirusScan Ent. Vista 32-bit	Pass
McAfee VirusScan Ent. Vista 64-bit	Pass
McAfee VirusScan Plus Vista 32-bit	Pass
    Microsoft OneCare Vista 32-bit	Pass
Symantec	Norton AntiVirus	Vista 64-bit	Pass
Trend Micro	AV plus AntiSpyware '07	Vista 32-bit	Pass
Trend Micro	Internet Security 2007 Vista 32-bit	Pass

Another report can be found on the AV-comparatives.org site.

It is noted that Microsoft's newer version of OneCare is slightly better then it's previous version.

I'd definetely go with NOD. It's the best AV in my opinion. If you have a bit more RAM (1GB would do), Kaspersky is another very good choice. I have tested both, along with a dozen others. Now I have NOD32 in my lappie (Vista Ultimate) and Kaspersky in my desktop PC (XP Pro), both working like a charm. :)

Currently I run avast! They where one of the 1st to offer an x64 version.

Although my desktop AV is just for cosmetics. I never had a virus (nor got one detected). All my email is scanned on our server, so infected email doesn't get to my inbox anyway. Even if it did, the way I practice safe computing it will be very hard to get infected.

Same here Arie. My machines never get infected, and when a virus tries to get through, it is destroyed on the spot and I never get to know of the action the AV took.

Another vote for NOD32, it's the best AV that I've ever used. It has the best detection rate of all, according to every test that I've seen so far, and uses minimal resources.

I agree, I gave up on Norton years ago, and it's got worse every year since then. You only have to look at people's Hijack This logs to see how many of them have badly infected machines that have Norton installed  McAfee isn't any better either IMO.

    Hi,

I may be butting in , but I, too need to secure my Vista laptop.

I have Kaspersky Internet Suite ready to be installed, but wonder if I am better off with different programs instead of the Suite.

For Spyware, I know SpyBot, SpywareBlaster and Adaware. I was planning to try SuperAntispyware instead of AdAware 7.

For Virus protection, I could use Avast which I now have on my XP or AntiVir.

My only concern is the Firewall. My only experience is with Tiny Personal Firewall v. 2.11.15 and I do not know if that would work in Vista. Any suggestions or input will be appreciated. Any additional software that I should consider?

    Does CCleaner work on Vista?

    Ann

Most of the time, it's what floats your boat. I personally used over 5-10 anti-viruses. (Trial versions). And there are great ones, with really bad guis, and really bad ones with easy to follow guis.

But if you want the best, that'd be a challenge. Seeing how each anti-virus engine is coded differently.

    For Ann

Ann, I woud suggest that you used Kaspersky AV instead of the suite, just like you said. As for CCleaner, it works fine on Vista all right, latest version which is 1.41.544. There's also Registry Fix compatible with Vista, but not free. :)

IMO I would add Panda to the Norton and McAfee list. Panda doesn't allow you to do useful things like open up a browser and misses infections. I like AVG but the free version is only for x86 (32 bit) versions of vista and if you have a x64 system you need the professional version and that costs money.

Beto, you must of experienced the hell of Panta too, I feel your pain. Having to pay for Panda is just another slap in the face. Just remembered, I think that Avast! Free version does support x64 Vista, so there is a free option out there (and probably many others I am not aware of).
