    Thread moved from XP OS
Windows Media Player 11 - cannot fast forward AVI Format
Using Windows Media Player 11, I am unable to fast forward within an AVI.
    I have the latest version.

These are my own movies taken with camcorder or digital camera.

Anyone know why? I can see and hear the movie with no difficulty.

    Thank You,

Well, I don't know if this is applicable to you, or if it even helps at all, but...

Apparently, there is some differences in AVI types of file formats.

For example, I have an ATI All in Wonder that I hook my video camera to in order to transfer from tape.
However, I could not play these AVI files until I downloaded and installed a special AVI driver from the ATI website.
And even after doing so, I still can not fast forward in any version of Media Player.

    so you might ask yourself:
What card/method are you using to get your camcorder tapes recorded as files on the PC?
Does the card's sofware offer other recording formats?
Does the card's manufacturer offer special AVI drivers?
Does your digital camera offer other recording formats?
If not, does the camera's manufacturer offer any special AVI drivers?

Some excellent suggestions from Bilb0, would be my first plan of attack.
Another suggestion, consider installing VLC media player. It is free, from open source and provides a wealth of media / audio playback features.
    Features
    Download page
    Documentation - User Guides
    VideoLAN Forums

Unfortunately, when it comes to media/Codex, your AVI may be proprietary, so like life, no guarantees. If you like, provide a down load link with a short AVI clip created by your camera (example traffic going past your house) and I will try it in VLC for fast forward capacity.

    Dennis, Bilb0

Thanks for the suggestions I may just have to get along without fast forward. Turns out Media Player works with some home videos but not with others. (some of mine came from other people's cameras)

If I need to edit the clip I can use Windows Movie Maker - for just watching not sure I want to go to all the trouble of finding things that work.

I already a have a ton of codecs on my PC - Not even sure what they are all for.

Dennis, thanks for the offer to test an AVI for me but I will pass for now.

I may go ahead and download and try VLC. Just as an alternative to have on my PC.

Avi is just a wrapper. the codecs used to encode the file could be one of several (e.g. divx, xvid, many others), so you would need the correct decoder for a given .avi file.

You can use GSpot (free) to find out what you need for any file and whether you have it.

    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

GSpot also shows the so-called fourcc code of the codec, and using that you can find info and download links at

    http://www.fourcc.org/indexcod.htm?main=codecs.php

Thank you for the Gspot routine suggestion - However it says I have all the necessary codecs. I think it is something on my pc but not sure yet. I believe my daughter can fast forward with the same avi and version of media player.
Have to check with her to be sure.

However she was having problems with with not having the correct codec for some other things so this will help her to find what she needs.
