    Hi-All,
I still have FF programs in Add/remove area...1.0.5 and 2.0.2
I just upgraded to FF 2.05, it took out 2.04 but previous upgrades didn't remove the older programs? Can I remove them? OR are they being used by the upgrade function?
I still have my old NS 7.0 installed....Removing it will not affect my bookmarks, I hope, since they are still there and I use them...Apparently, FF does not import them, though I've tried.. I remember Ramona saying - bookmarks are attached to one's profile NOT the program, SO by removing the program, it won't harm bookmarks???? For some "reason" I've never understood that simple
rule!! Just dose not make sense!!!
    Thanks All,
    John in Dallas.

    John,

Did you use the auto-update feature in Firefox to install the 2.0.0.x versions? If so then uninstalling older versions in Add/Remove could remove the current version. I alway disable the auto-update feature and instead download and install the full version.

Go ahead and download the full version of 2.0.0.5, then uninstall the older versions thru Add/Remove. If it causes a problem then just reinstall 2.0.0.5 This won't affect your Profile in any way.

Do you have a bookmarks.html file, and a bookmarksbackup folder in your profilename folder (xxxxxxxx.profilename)? If so, then Firefox must have migrated your Bookmarks. Firefox wouldn't be using the Netscape Bookmarks, unless you pointed to that file with a script in the prefs.js file.

All your preferences are in the xxxxxxxx.profilename folder, which is located in a separate location than the Program Folders. That is why installing and uninstalling have no effect on your Profile. The Program folder includes the hard coded program files, which make Firefox/Thunderbird/Netscape run. The Profiles are the files which contain your choices on what you wish to view, and have happen when the program is running...

    Program Files: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

    Profiles: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename

To ensure that you don't lose the Netscape bookmarks.html file, export it as an ldif file, or else, simply copy the file to your backup folder.

It is definitely safe to remove Netscape 7.0.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Hi-Ramona,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was using the "update" feature in FF. I thought it would remove older versions, but it didn't. I took your advice and won't use that feature from now on.
When I removed the older versions, it removed "everything" ? though ff 2.05 showed in add/remove area, it wasn't working. I couldn't open the program, it didn't exist!!? Strange? I d/l again from the site and installed, it's working OK and only one instance of FF in A/R area...
Fortunately, I didn't lose any bmks. etc....I did back up "everything.. "
I just discovered the TweakGuides http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_8.html
from Brian's newsletter, that's VERY interesting how to tweak FF. Although, It does use SO much memory - in triple digits! I have 1gig 1/2, but I'll check in about:config and see how I can reduce that...
As always, thanks so much for ALL you do.

    John,
the bookmarks.html file is located in the profile folder, in an entirely different location than the program. I don't remember about NS7.0, but I think that it was made up of two components. The program and the profile. On uninstalling most of the program files and folders are removed, with the major exception of the plugins, and a couple of other items. The profile is left untouched. Later NSs like 7.1 and 7.2 were made up of three components, the third one being located in the Common File folder (beats me why).
I don't know why you would have have not removed older versions, but that would explain why the NS settings are not imported, as they are already in the Firefox profile!
If you look in your Bookmarks|Organize bookmarks, you should see a "Netscape6/7Mozilla item. Those are the imported bookmarks, and you can select to have them in your Personal Toolbar (Edit|Set as Personal Toolbar
