Hi there. I'm new to this forum and I would like some assistance if there may be, please. I was trying to re-install my win 2000 (currently running SP4). Usually whenever I need to do this, it goes fine. However, this last time I received this "missing file ajc8cq0x.sys" error at the beginning of the setup - you know - the blue screen and files are expanding. (I can't even skip this ".
I did a search of this forum as well as the 'Net and could not find this error. Has anyone ever seen this - of so, how is it resolved? Short of a clean install of course. Let me know if there's more info I need to provide. thanks in advance =)

A random file name like acj8cq0x.sys is usually a pointer to a virus.

Make sure you are booting from the Win2K CD and delete the HD partition before running setup. Setup a new partition & reformat.

Thanks Arie. Couple of questions. 1) how do I exactly delete the HD partition and 2) when I do this, will I lose all my applications and stuff? This what I'm trying to avoid. But if this is the only way, then I guess maybe I will have to back up everything and do your reformat recommendation. Darn virus ...

OK, if you want to install 'on top', you may want to see if we can identify the pest that's causing the error.

Read this post, then post a HijackThis log in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.
