Hi I did a search on here for windows xp restore point I get everything else but that.

everytime I got to restore system point the bold on the calander it tells me it can't restore comptuer to that date. What good is the restore point system and is there anything I can do to get it to work right?

Turn off System Restore, reboot and turn it back on again - this deletes all restore points. The restore points may be corrupted - or no changes had been made.

Thanks to Bob M for asking "my" question!

And BIG THANKS to Pete C for the Quick Answer!!
Stick a fresh Gold Star on your monitor, Pete!

The One Thing I wondered: HOW do you turn Restore on and off??
Answer:

* Click on "Start "
* Find & Click "Help and Support "
* Find & Click "Undo changes with System Restore "
* (left column) Click "System Restore Settings "
* Little Box near top of "System Restore" page marked "Turn OFF Syst Restore "
* Click box to set Checkmark ON to turn Restore feature OFF

* You get a "caution" page asking if you really want to turn it off and loose
all Restore Points ...
Tell it OK - darn thing doesn't work anyway! :p

When you come back and return to the System Restore pages, after Shut Down and Re-Boot -
there's a quick "Do you want to turn Restore ON?" question - say yes.

Now a Follow-up Question for Pete >>>

Is there any way to securely "save" the Restore Data?
Does no good to "save restore points" if good ole Winderz is going to *corrupt* them
and never tell you that data has been corrupted.

THANKS Again, Pete.

Go direct to the horse's mouth :) ....

Right click My Computer icon > Properties > System Restore tab.
The System Restore data is stored in System Volume Information, a hidden folder. Clearly that can be backed up, but I am not sure what good that would do you as SR adds check points at regular intervals and the reference to tthose which appear in the SR dialogue are undoubtedly stored elsewhere.

BTW - I have not had a problem with SR on my computers since XP was first released.

An alternative, apart from ghosting/imaging the drive using Ghost or Acronis is to use ASR (Automated System Recovery) bearing in mind that, like a ghost image of the drive, it is only up to date to the day it was made. ASR has saved my bacon more than once :)

Another "hidden" Winderz goodie!
It's more senic to take the Looong way around the block! :p

Ahhhh ... but there's the ever-so-typical Winderz fine print for ASR >>>

"Note: Users of Windows XP Home are out of luck:
ASR is not available on their system. While mentions of this feature do exist in the backup utility of Windows XP Home, ASR is only functional in Windows XP Professional. "

LOVE that Winderz Gang!
